So I’ll be in Tampa, FL for a week but here are a few things to keep you busy while I’m gone.

Yes, you should absolutely go drink Festbier at Ardent. Maybe save me some, please?

Get “Involved” and support a great cause at the Veil.

Triple Crossing has gone binary with their beer names. Don’t worry, I’ve done the work for you.  “01100111 01110010 01101001 01100100” translates to GRID.

While you’re there, you might as well grab some Clever Girl as well.

Hardywood has a new sipper coming your way in the form of Brandy Cru this Saturday September 23rd. Sounds like it will be a nice beer to curl up with by a fire as the nights get colder. Head over to the Facebook event to learn more.

There is a new hat being thrown into Richmond’s Oktoberfest ring. That hat belongs to Strangeways Brewing and knowing Neil Burton’s love for the German born festival, I’m surprised it has taken them this long to have one of their own. Unlike other festivals in town, Strangeways will be celebrating through the traditional Oktoberfest season (9/16 – 10/3) plus all of October.

Check out the rest of what Strangeways has planned:

This Friday, September 15th starting at 4pm Kicks off Oktoberfest in Strangeways Outdoor Biergarten, plus the release of our brand new seasonal Oktoberfest beer FEST!

We’ll be celebrating all through the traditional Oktoberfest (Sept. 16-Oct. 3) and then we’ll just keep on going all October long. Come sit outside in our Outdoor Biergarten, and drink from liter steins just like they do in the Old Country. Strangeways Steins full of select flagship beers and our special Oktoberfest brew, FEST will be available. $13 gets you your BIG pour, or $20 gets you the liter of beer AND you get to keep your commemorative Strangeways Stein to take home.

The German Snack Shack will serving up German eats including Brats marinated in our very own Helles Frozen Over Munich Helles Lager. Be sure to pair your brät with a stein full of the Helles Frozen Over, or our newest seasonal lager FEST Oktoberfest beer for a flavorful combo.

German Snack Shack Schedule:
Friday, September 15 4-9pm
Friday, September 22 4-9pm
Saturday, September 23 noon-7pm

Each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Oktoberfest, we will spontaneously challenge our biergarten patrons to Stein holding contests for awesome Strangeways merchandise. You never know when it will happen, so plan to come hang.

The following beers will be available in Strangeways Steins:
-FEST Oktoberfest Bier
-Helles Frozen Over Munich Helles Lager
-Albino Monkey Belgian White Ale
-Hop Howler IPA
-Woodbooger Belgian Brown Ale
-Phantasmic Belgian IPA

Beers to Throw Back As You Groove At Stone’s Throw Down in RVA

Stone Brewing will celebrate the one year anniversary of the opening of their east coast facility here in Richmond this Saturday September 9th starting at noon with a party on Brown’s Island full of live music and independent craft beer as unique and dynamic as Richmond itself.

Stone’s Throw Down in RVA was born out of Stone’s desire to enrich their fan’s experiences with their beers and sought to curate bands for the festival that complimented the beers.

So which beers go best with the bands performing on the island? That’s the exact question I posed to a few people at Stone. Here are their responses:

Daylen Dalrymple, Marketing Communications Manager

Sometimes contrast is just as important in creating a complementary beer pairing. such is the case with Northern Virginia’s Pontiak, whose hypnotic sludgy jams are an ideal counterpart to the crisp, refreshing, yet still bitter Stone Delicious IPA. Seeing this band Live is pretty unbelievable, sort of like the reaction we get when we tell people that Stone Delicious IPA is actually gluten reduced!

Ethan Anderson, VP of Marketing

I’d pair Stone Ripper with JEFF The Brotherhood. It’s a San Diego style pale ale inspired by the coastal surf scenes of Australia and So Cal. Psychedelic garage rock pairs perfectly with that rippin’ swell of hops. Of course, they have a song called ‘Ripper’ too, so I guess we shouldn’t overlook that.

Jeff Martin, Director of Brewing Operations, East Coast

I’ll be pairing Stone Go To IPA with No BS! Brass Band on Saturday. Thumping beats with horns are delivered with R&B stylings by No BS! Brass Band. It’s a sound that most of us are familiar with and recognize from our schooldays yet it’s been expanded into something new and different. Stone Go To IPA is the perfect pair. It’s a lower ABV session IPA that stuns you with its surprisingly bold flavor. Just like the band’s infectious tunes, you can definitely kick back more than one of these!

Dominic Engels, Stone Brewing CEO

Pair the definitive West Coast IPA that birthed a generation of hop fanatics with the furious East Coast funk of Boston-born Lettuce and you get the ultimate combination of ICONIC and BIONIC.  Blistering bass, punctuating horns, righteously dank and lingeringly bitter.  Music and beer swirl in some new zombie-apocalyptic strain of DNA that will spawn a new funkin’ IPA army for the now.

Here is the full lineup of artists performing Saturday:

Tickets for the all ages festival are $10/person; free admission for children ages 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance online here.

Head over to the Facebook event for updates and more details including pre- and after-parties.
