Under Construction…

October? Yes, October. That was the last time I felt like putting any energy into this blog.

Why? It’s not really its fault but let’s blame 2016. For much of the year, it felt like talking about beer was silly considering there were much more important things than beer happening in the world. Honestly, I still feel that way sometimes. For six months, I have struggled with depression and let it stop me from sharing my love for Richmond, VA. It was all too easy to convince myself that the obstacles that kept me from writing were so insurmountable that it was better to quit all together. That was a mistake.

I’m going to do my best to change that today. Past readers should notice a new format to the site. What do you think? I’m not totally sold yet. There may be a few more changes down the line.

There is no telling what the future holds but for now here are some things to get you by.

Swine & Brine at Ardent Craft Ales — April 8th Noon to 6pm

Swine & Brine has moved to Saturday for its third year at Ardent. Ardent has done away with the previous years’ ticket costs and made this year free to enter. Food and beer tickets are $6 each though some food items may take multiple tickets. Check out this menu.

Food menu for Swine & Brine is up, check it out! This and more info on our Facebook (link in bio), website, and Untappd events.

The Spins: Vinyl Listening Party with Gorillaz ‘Demon Days’ at Triple Crossing Foushee — April 27th 7pm

This listening party has me excited like nothing else before it.  For one, taking on record collecting as a new hobby became a comfort when all I could feel was sad and angry. Of course, I was buying a lot of blues early on. Joining Vinyl Me, Please was the best decisions I’ve made so far. I’ve wanted to attend one of these listening sessions for past records-of-the-month but the closest location, Starr Hill Brewing, was just too far on a Thursday night. I’m ecstatic to see that Triple Crossing will start hosting these with the Gorillaz “Demon Days” reissue.  They are even bringing back their Demon Days Hoppy Red Ale for this.

Oh yeah and the 27th also just so happens to be my 40th birthday. If that’s not a reason to celebrate then I don’t know. Let’s party, Richmond!

Sign up for the club and get $10 to use in their store through this link.

Thank you to my friends who have encouraged me even if they didn’t know how much I was hurting. Let’s just not call this a comeback….you know the rest.

Take it LL…..

Celebrate Richmond Beer’s Renaissance At Hardywood’s Fifth Anniversary Saturday

The renaissance of the Richmond beer scene start with the opening of Hardywood five years ago. Celebrate their success this Saturday October 22nd starting at 1pm.

Offering for the first time, the backbone of Trickery, Foolery & Ruse: Hardywood Cassowary!

Cloaked in black and crowned with vibrant color, the cassowary is the embodiment of prehistoric grace and primal ferocity. Our imperial milk stout is equally bold and unapologetically rich, presenting a balanced aroma of chocolate truffle and dark fruits followed by leather, toffee and almond that linger on the palate and earn the name Hardywood Cassowary; a graceful behemoth in the beer world. 11% ABV

Hardywood Cassowary will be available in 750mL bottles ONLY (no draft at this time). 4 bottle limit per guest! Here’s how it’s going to work:
·There will be a 4 bottle limit per person for this first time run.
·With this being a first release, we will plan for a line.
·At 11:45AM we will distribute tickets to the first 270 guests, reserving ticket holders an opportunity to purchase up to 4 bottles.
·The bottle sale will begin at 1PM when the brewery opens for service.
·You must be in line, in chronological order at 1PM to redeem your ticket for bottles.
·If bottles remain after the first 270 guests, we will continue to sell through at a 4 bottle limit per person until the last bottle is sold.

[Hardywood Cassowary WILL be returning both in bottles AND on draft in the future. Our brewers are working hard to make more of this beer available soon. STAY TUNED!]

Blue Bee Cider Summit Stables Grand Opening: The Most Scotts Addition-est Opening Ever Thru Collaborations

blue-bee-summit-stables-openingBlue Bee Cider reopens in their new Summit Stables location in Scotts Addition with a grand opening weekend celebration starting on Saturday October 15th.  You can get a preview Friday night with tickets to their soft opening event benefitting the EnRichmond Foundation’s beautification and maintenance of our city parks.

In addition to their normal lineup, Saturday will see the release of three new ciders:

Think that would be enough for an opening? You’d be wrong. This opening must be grand! To accomplish a grandness not often seen, Blue Bee went out to play with their other libation producing neighbors in Scotts Addition and came back with six collaborations that will be tapped at various times during the day:

  1. Ardent Craft Ales made “Smokin’ Mower”, a session blonde ale fermented with smoked Winesap and Stayman juice. Cellar team brought a bin of apples to Ardent and smoked them whole in ZZQ’s smoker with help from ZZQ and the Ardent team. We also fermented the smoked juice with a champagne yeast to dry and created the 2nd batch in two years of our smoked cider.
  2.  Black Heath Meadery made “Scott’s Edition”, a cyser fermented with Gold Rush juice and Virginia wildflower honey, with a generous addition of Bosc pear juice and Black Mission figs.
  3. The Veil Brewing Co, made “Boi Friendz”, a barrel-fermented Brett IPA with Mosaic and Citra hops fermented with 30% unpasteurized Gold Rush juice. One of the barrels previously held the Veil’s Jeune (single barrel spontaneously fermented ale) and the other was a first use Virginia red wine barrel.
  4. Isley Brewing Co, made “Apple Brown Betty”, the return of our 2014 collaboration – an English brown ale fermented with Grimes Golden juice.
  5. Reservoir Distillery provided one of their recently emptied barrels and helped us decide on what unique offering to age and which one of their barrels to use (rye, wheat, or bourbon). We chose our Harvest Ration (dessert cider fortified with brandy) in their rye whiskey barrel for over four months.
  6. Three Notch’d Brewing Co.‘s RVA Collab House made “Farm to Stable”, a gose fermented with Gold Rush juice. The collaboration combines the tropical notes and high acidity from Gold Rush apples with a tart and salty gose base.

The collaborations will be tapped at the following times:

1PM — Reservoir Distillery

2PM — Ardent Craft Ales

3PM — Black Heath Meadery
4PM — The Veil Brewing Co.

5PM — Three Notch’d Brewing Company RVA Collab House

6PM — Isley Brewing Company

Do The Georgie Porgie With Ardent Craft Ales & Center Of The Universe OnThe Quirk Hotel’s Rooftop To Celebrate Start Of Virginia Pride Month

Pride-Kickoff-eventGeorgie Porgie, Puddin’ and Pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry,
When the boys came out to play,
Georgie Porgie ran away.

Or at least that’s how the nursery rhyme used to go but today Georgie Porgie has decided to stay. You can taste why as Ardent Craft Ales, Center of the Universe, Virginia Pride, and OutRVA celebrate the release of two collaborations beers, Georgie & Porgie, on the rooftop of the Quirk Hotel on Thursday September 1st from 6 – 9PM.

“Georgie” from Ardent is a mixed berry “pie” pale ale (4.7% ABV). “Porgie” from COTU is a chocolate “pudding” porter (5.7% ABV). Both beers will be released in limited edition 750ml bottles with inscriptions from each brewery that capture the sentiment:

Georgie and Porgie are two beers that represent the love we have for craft beer and for everyone who drinks it, no matter who they are and who they love.

GeorgiePorgieRelease_SQ.jpg

Ardent and COTU will have taproom releases of their respective beers on Saturday September 3rd. Visitors to the taprooms and Quirk’s rooftop will be able to enjoy the beers in special limited edition glassware created just for this collaboration.

VIRGINIA PRIDE MONTH KICKS OFF WITH RELEASE PARTY AT QUIRK HOTEL AND RELEASE OF LOCAL LIMITED EDITION “GEORGIE” & “PORGIE” BEERS

VIRGINIA PRIDE, OUTRVA, ARDENT CRAFT ALES, AND CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE BREWING COLLABORATING TO HOST TASTING EVENTS IN SUPPORT OF PRIDE 2016

August 23, 2016 – RICHMOND, Virginia – Virginia Pride, OutRVA, Ardent Craft Ales, and Center of the Universe Brewing Company are excited to announce the upcoming release of their limited edition Pride 2016 beers “Georgie” and “Porgie” on Thursday, September 1 as well as a full line-up of tasting events throughout September in the Richmond area. This collaborative project was months in the making, with all four organizations and breweries coming together to make a playful, yet meaningful contribution to Pride Month. The resulting beers refer to the traditional nursery rhyme “Georgie Porgie” and not only lent ideas for the beers themselves but also was slightly adjusted from “ran away” to “decided to stay.” The statement on both bottles aptly captures the sentiment behind this project: “Georgie and Porgie are two beers that represent the love we have for craft beer and for everyone who drinks it, no matter who they are and who they love.”

Ardent’s “Georgie” beer is a Mixed Berry Pale Ale (4.7% abv) which represents the “pie” in the rhyme, and COTU’s “Porgie” beer is a Chocolate Pudding Porter (5.7% abv) which plays on the “pudding” line. Both beers will be available on draft throughout Richmond and in limited-edition 750 mL bottles. Please see the following list and descriptions of release events and supporting tastings throughout Pride 2016:
