American Craft Beer Week RVA 2013: Tap Takeovers, Firkin Nights, & Tappings

There will be a lot of tap takeovers as Richmond celebrates American Craft Beer Week May 13 – 19.  I’m still in the process of gathering details on a lot of items but here is what I have so far.  As always, I recommend you bookmark this page to check back for updates.

Monday May 13th

Pins for the Win — 5pm

In lieu of the normal pin crawl, it seems Taste the Local is going for a more choose your own adventure type of night with Virginia beer pin tappings at three special locations.  All pins will be tapped at 5pm:

Update: Joe’s will tap thier pin at 6:30pm; this should make it easier on folks trying to enjoy all three pins.

5PM — Commercial Taphouse — Hardywood Belgian DIPA with Amarillo hops
6:30PM — Joe’s Inn in the Fan — Legend Hopfest with Centennial hops, sweet orange peel, & Reservoir bourbon chips. Filled by Matt & Ben.

Every night of American Craft Beer Week, you will be able to enjoy $2.50 pints at Popkin Tavern all night long.

Parkway Brewing RVA Launch at Capital Ale House Innsbrook

Salem, Virginia’s Parkway Brewing will make their Richmond debut at Cap Ale Innsbrook with tappings of their Bridge Builder Blonde and Get Bent Mountain IPA.

New Belgium at Buffalo Wild Wings VA Center

Buffalo Wild Wings VA Center Commons location will be featuring New Belgium all week where they will have Rampant Imperial IPA, Ranger IPA, and Fat Tire on tap. 

Tuesday May 14th

Anchor 80’s Night at Station 2

Head over to Station 2 for 80’s music and costumes as they tap beers from Anchor Brewing, America’s first craft brewery.. Beers on draft will include:

Heavy Seas Night at Tarrant’s Cafe — 5PM

A night of Heavy Seas beers featuring Ellen Boucher’s firkin of Peg Leg Imperial Stout with cherry, vanilla, coconut, and coffee beans.

Tarrant’s will also be tapping the following Heavy Seas beers:

Holy Sheet – Belgian Dubbel aged in Brandy barrels. Tarrant’s has two of the four kegs in Richmond.

Williamsburg Alewerks at Sedona Taphouse — 5PM

Head over to Midlothian as Sedona taps some Williamsburg Alewerks beers and take home a glass.

American Craft Beer Week RVA 2013: Festivals & Parties

American Craft Beer Week officially runs from May 13th to 19th but as in years past Richmond will start the party early.  Here are some details on festivals and parties happening during the week.  Bookmark this page and check back for updates.

Saturday May 11th

Virginia Hops and Barley Fest

The third annual Virginia Hops & Barley Festival will feature over 30 Virginia craft beers.  Tickets are $15/person in advance or $20/person at door if available and include unlimited sampling of all the beers. VIP tickets are $45/person and include:

JRHB will celebrate their 30th anniversary at Legend Saturday night.  While it is a private party, there is nothing stopping you from heading to Legend to raise a glass to one of the oldest homebrew clubs in the country.

RVA Beer Week 2012: Richmond Beer Lovers Bar Bus Tour This Friday

Plenty of room left on this bus tour with Richmond Beer Lovers:

As part of Richmond Beer Week, Richmond Beer Lovers will be hosting a bar tour via the Bottom & Back Bus (2BNB Bus) on Friday, November 9th.The plan is that the 2BNB bus will run starting at Mekong from 6pm to 11pm, with stops at The Camel and Popkin Tavern for ““Broad Street Gets Goose’d”  Goose Island Night.

We are asking for a suggested donation of $5 per person to help with fuel costs for the bus.  Since the Bottom & Back bus is a 501(c)(3), you can feel good about helping them out.  This event will be limited to 40 people and you must be signed up with Richmond Beer Lovers to be guaranteed a spot on the bus!

1st stop – 6pm

Mekong Restaurant

Grab a beer at the bar and meet up in the back room.  You must check-in to get your pass for the bus.

RVA Beer Week 2012: Four Beer Dinners & A Brunch

With four beer dinners and a brunch this week, I will most likely be very fat by the end of RVA Beer Week. Fat and very happy.

Sunday November 4th

Secco Wine Bar’s October beer brunch had to be moved due to Hurricane Sandy so now we are welcoming them to RVA Beer Week.

Update:  Secco will be donating 10% of the proceeds from this Sunday’s brunch to the American Red Cross.

Tuesday November 6th

Blue Goat Devils Backbone Beer Dinner — 6:30PM

Attending a Devils Backbone beer dinner hosted by The  Blue Goat in conjunction with Slowfood’s RVA Chapter could be the no brainer of the week.  I don’t have a menu yet but I’m working on getting one.

Four Point Pale Ale– extra hoppy low gravity beer. The beer is slightly floral with a pleasant resinous note Scottish-style Wee Heavy “Kilt Flasher“- Deep rich dark brown ruby hued beer Vienna Lager- 2012 Gold World Beer Cup, 2012 Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal Winner, and 2009 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal winner

Wednesday November 7th

Fat Dragon Virginia Beer Dinner — 6:30PM

Fat Dragon is not even open yet and they’ve already scheduled their first beer dinner.  Their Virginia Beer Dinner will be five courses featuring beers from Hardywood, O’Connor, and Starr Hill.  Cost for the dinner will be $45/person excluding tax and tip.  I will post a menu as soon as I receive it.

Thursday November 8th

Libbie is hosting a Fall Harvest Victory Beer Dinner benefiting the James River Association starting at 7PM.

TJs probably has the most interesting dinner concept of the week.  For their Whole Hog & VA Cask Beer Pig & Pins Dinner, Chef Patrick Ehemann has crafted a 5 course whole hog dinner to pair with cask beer from Mad Fox, O’Connor, Hardywood, Legend and Devils Backbone.

RVA Beer Week 2012: Capital Ale House Anniversary Party

Capital Ale House is giving you three chances to celebrate their 10th anniversary starting tomorrow Friday November 2nd.  They will be tapping two special beers from Legend Brewing, Anniversary Barleywine and California Common Ale (Steam Beer).  To get the schwag, you’ll need to buy tickets here and select the date you want to attend.  The anniversary beers will be tapped at 5pm Friday.

American Craft Beer Week, RVA Style

Update: Looks like I’m getting a Mad Fox beer I’ve never had before!  Commercial Taphouse will be getting Mad Fox’s Broad Street IPA – 6.8% ABV aka Snap IPA, an American-style India Pale Ale that is brewed with 100% Centennial/CTZ hops from the Pacific Northwest and then dry-hopped with over 44lbs of Centennial/CTZ hops for an extra fresh hop punch. This beer has a fresh resiny herbal and citrusy grapefruit aroma that follows through to a tingling hoppy herbal bitterness in the finish. The British pale and German Vienna malts provide a biscuity malt sweetness that balances the hop bitterness.
Selba (8pm)
Beer: Victory Ranch R DIPA- 9% ABV DIPA with whole flower Centennial hops grown on Roy Farms in Yakima Valley.  Victory’s Ranch series is a rotating double IPA with hops sourced from one different farm for each batch.

Breckenridge Steal the Glass Night at Capital Ale House

Breckenridge Brewery is probably one of my favorite Colorado breweries just because of their Vanilla Porter. If you’re heading to Cap Ale for the evening, I would make sure to get one of these glasses to go.

Wednesday May 16th

Beer Theater: Goose Island

Celebrate the triumphant return of Wine & Beer Westpark owner Matty Lake’s Beer Theater in the Capital Ale House Downtown Music Hall starting at 5:30pm. Settle in to the Music Hall for a skype tasting with brewmaster Brett Porter featuring Sofie, Matilda, Pere Jacques, 312, Honkers, and IPA.  Cost for the tasting is $10/person.  Read more over at Facebook event here.

Goose Island Beer Dinner at Acacia Midtown
At first, I was worried about this beer dinner and beer theater being on the same night.  Fortunately, this dinner is being structured such that you can come in anytime Wednesday night from 5:30 -9pm and get this meal.  Take a look at the menu.

Thursday May 17th

O’Connor Firkin Night

There will be three firkins from O’Connor Brewing in town Thursday night.  Head over to Station 2 to get Rad Nun (Red Nun Red Ale infused with Raspberries) or Brutella (Great Dismal Black IPA infused with Peanut Butter, Nutella, Chopped Hazelnuts and Dry-roasted Peanuts.

Meanwhile, The Camel will have a pin of Xocolat, Great Dismal with organic fair trade cocoa and ground cinnamon.

Friday May 18th

Taste the Local Tasting at Once Upon a Vine South

Head over to  the  Once Upon a Vine off Forrest Hill Ave to meet Virginia brewers and taste their beers. Be prepared to have a great time.  Tasting runs from 5 – 8pm.
