Hardywood & Plan 9’s 33 1/3 Black Vinyl Stout Release Is Today. All Of This Citrus Smells Amazing!
Hardywood has teamed up with Plan 9 to celebrate the record store’s passion for vinyl records over the decades, 33 1/3 years of vinyl love in Richmond to be exact. They have poured their love into the liquid sound of 33 1/3 Black Vinyl Stout bringing “forth the warmth of sound and flavor achieved with a full bodied stout (or a vinyl record) and a chorus of citrus flavors to complete the track. Cara Cara oranges, Sumo mandarins, and kumquats harmonize together to compliment the deep chocolate malt backbone. Savor in stereo.”
I happened into Hardywood just in time to smell the amazing combination of citrus that would make it into this beer. If you have ever sectioned any type of citrus, you how much of a pain it can be. Yes, I helped a little bit.
Head over to Hardywood today Saturday March 7th starting at 2pm to give this collaboration a try. Black Vinyl Stout will be available on draft for pints and growler fills.
Hardywood will also debut an Irish Coffee Stout on nitro on Saturday as well.
Hardywood Irish Coffee Stout celebrates the luck of the Irish channeling warm rich, creamy notes of vanilla beans along strong roasty, dark chocolate flavors. We partnered with Cafe Stella in historic Ghent in Norfolk Virginia using their espresso roast to perk up your day and blend with Willamette hops for a beautiful floral, earthy aroma. Served on Nitro Tap. 8.5% ABV 25 SRM 40 IBU
Plan 9 will have DJs spinning from 2- 4:30 followed by live music from Hotel X, The Diamond Center, White Laces, and Kepone.
Head over to the Facebook event for more information and updates.
Don’t Miss Hardywood Milkman & Cigar City Milkmaid Collaboration Release Saturday
Hardywood and Cigar City have joined forces to create two original milk stouts — Milkman and Milkmaid.
With its full body, palate coating viscosity, and a hefty 13.5% ABV, The Milkman is a beer to be reckoned with. Heaps of chocolate malts and a massive addition of gourmet cocoa nibs meld with a generous dose of milk sugar to satisfy the biggest chocolate craving. Available on draft at the brewery and in 750mL bottles to go (limit 2 bottles per guest, no growler fills).
The Milkmaid displays a copper to amber color, surprising and delighting your olfactory senses and tastebuds with the unmistakable roasted and chocolate notes of a stout. Cocoa nibs from Ghana and Ecuador impart hints of espresso and roast, while a unique combination of hop varieties adds layers of dark chocolate and licorice. 7%ABV Available in 750mL bottles to go only (limit 2 bottles per guest).
These stouts will be available for the first time anywhere Saturday January 24th starting at 2pm. A sweeping lineup of Hardywood and Cigar City beers will join these two new stouts to create an event not to be missed.
Check out the tap list and locations as detailed by Hardywood.

Bunnyman R.I.P.s Into Station 2 with Legend & Lost Rhino Tonight
Experience the urban legend of the Bunny Man tonight as Legend Brewing teams up with Lost Rhino to present the latest in the Urban Legend series “RIP Ale,” a Red IPA at Station 2 tonight Thursday September 25th at 5pm.
Urban Legend Story: Incidents dating back to the early 1900s suggest a man wearing a white bunny suit with long floppy ears terrorized innocent Northern Virginians. In one such instance, a man and his fiancé were foolhardily parked alone and became startled by a knocking outside their window. Moments later, their front windshield was smashed with a weighty axe, and through the specks of shattered glass, they saw a man dressed head to toe in a bunny costume. Again, the Bunny Man was identified intimidating Fairfax County residents—he bludgeoned possessions with an axe and induced fear in the community with his savage behavior….
Description of Style: Legend Brewing Co, in collaboration with Favio Garcia (Brewmaster, Lost Rhino), shed light on this urban legend with the creation of the “RIP Ale,” a Red IPA. Specialty malts evoke a soft, drinkable profile, while Amarillo and Chinook hops add a tropical aroma and piney bitterness. If there’s a better boozy representation of a bunny suit wearing ax-murderer, we’ve yet to try it. Though the story is cryptic and one to keep you up at night, Legend Brewing Co. and Lost Rhino transforms the terror of the murderous Bunny Man into imbibing enjoyment.

Hardywood & Starr Hill Collaboration Amped Up Ale Only At Fall Line Fest This Weekend
Fall Line Fest rolls back into town Friday and Saturday nights with 50+ bands at six local venues turning the weekend into musical insanity. You’re going, right? I had a blast last year. Head over to RVA Playlist’s Fall Line Fest Beginners Guide to get started. I’m working on my schedule as I type this — so many choices!
Building on the success of last year’s exclusive Fall Line Fest ale from Hardywood, organizers have raised the bar by teaming with Hardywood and Starr Hill breweries to collaborate on this year’s beer. Aptly named by RVA’s own Page Hayes, “Fall Line Fest Amped Up Ale” is a Farmhouse ale, dry-hopped with Sorachi Ace and Mandarina Bavaria hops and spiced with fresh local ginger. I’m hearing from multiple sources that it is quite delicious. The beer debuted for a short time in Starr Hill’s taproom but will be served exclusively at Fall Line Fest venues as well as key accounts involved with the festival.
Hardywood’s head brewer, Brian Nelson, had this to say about the beer:
I think for us, collaborating with Starr Hill was probably long overdue. When the idea was proposed to create a beer together for Fall Line Fest, you could see and hear the excitement building as we all discussed what was possible…In the end, I think we captured the brewing styles and concepts of both breweries in the Fall Line Fest Amped Up Ale. Cheers to Robbie O’Cain and the Starr Hill crew for helping to make this beer excellent—the only thing left to do now is bring on the music!
Robbie O’Cain, Starr Hill’s Manager of Brewery Operations, relayed:
It is always great to work with Virginia brewers, especially when it involves new ingredients and new processes. One of the great things about the industry, especially in Virginia, is that we share ideas and process knowledge while maintaining our own unique way of doing things…Brian Nelson and the brewing team at Hardywood did a great job with the pilot batch, which allowed us to hone in on the final recipe. We are excited to present this beer in collaboration with our good friends at Hardywood, and we hope Fall Line Fest patrons will enjoy this brew while listening to some awesome music.
Get you tickets here, drink the beer, and have an awesome time!
