Once again it is time to celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day today Friday September 19th.  Of course, Heavy Seas is up in the mix but this year they have raised the stakes by attempting to set the record for the largest simultaneous cask tapping in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Making its first debut outside of Heavy Seas’ taproom, the firkin to be tapped at several locations up and down the East Coast will be Loose Cannon IPA with grapefruit zest.

The Richmond area boasts two locations on the list: Hurley’s Tavern and Southern Railway Taphouse. Beyond the firkin tappings, you can expect  many give-a-ways for including t-shirts, eye patches, stickers, temporary tattoos, and a backdrop for pictures.

Southern Railway will also have a live pirate show.

Head over to the Virginia ITLAPD Facebook event for more information and updates. The parties start at 5pm with cask tappings at 6pm.

Firkin Your Friday At Brew With Lickinghole Creek’s Pumpkin Ain’t Easy Pin

Simply put, today Friday October 25th at 5pm will be your first chance to have an idea of what Lickinghole Creek’s Estate pumpkin beer, Pumpkin Ain’t Easy, will taste like except with spices.  Brew in Chesterfield is tapping a pin containing 90% Pumpkin Ain’t Easy, 10% Three Chopt Tripel, and cinnamon nibs. Yes, cinnamon nibs not cocoa. I had to look it up; they are a real thing. They will have other Lickinghole Creeek beers on tap as well.  Owner Sean-Thomas Pumphrey will be there as well to answer your questions as well.

Maybe ask why not call the beer “Punkin Ain’t Easy.”  I guess that’d require new neck labels.

UPDATE: Apparently, double the Lickinghole Creek firkin goodness is on tap for today.  Bucket Trade in Chester is tapping a pin containing 90% Short Pump Saison, 10% Three Chopt Tripel, and reconditioned 2006 Pu-erh tea.

According to wikipedia:

Pu-erh or Pu’er tea is a variety of fermented dark tea produced in Yunnan province, China.[1][2][3]Fermentation is a tea production style in which the tea leaves undergo microbial fermentation and oxidation after they are dried and rolled.[4] This process is a Chinese specialty and produces tea known as Hei Cha (黑茶), commonly translated as dark, or black tea (this type of tea is completely different from what in West is known as “black tea”, which in China is called “red tea” 红茶). The most famous variety of this category of tea is Pu-erh from Yunnan Province, named after the trading post for dark tea during imperial China.[5]

Bucket Trade will tap their pin at 5pm. Head over to the Facebook event for more information.

Train For Hardywood Twilight Four Miler With Firkin Crawl Thursday

Richmond is truly turning into such a wonderful beer town.  Here I am coming off the meaty-ale high that was the Beer & Charcuterie pairing at The Room at Secco Wine Bar.

charcuterie The Room SeccoYes, it was all delicious.  It us events like this that can make it difficult to pick and choose between all the different beer, live music, and theatre events that are readily abundant and all exceptional.  So here is the series of events making me miss the Hardywood Firkin Crawl this Thursday February 21st:

  1. Originally, I had tickets for Mary Poppins at the Landmark for Friday night.
  2. Burger Blast at Virginia Wine Expo is announced and I scurry to move tickets to Thursday to keep Saturday free just in case…
  3. Hardywood Firkin crawl is announced on Facebook.  I accept forgetting I already had plans which I only remembered yesterday.

So no crawl for me but you should definitely check it out.  I’m really intrigued by that Smoked IPA.

Here are the stops on the crawl:

5:15PM — Commercial Taphouse — ESB dry hopped with Chinook hops
6:00PM — Secco Wine Bar — Smoked IPA dry hopped with Amarillo & Citra hops
7:00PM — Burger Bach — Barrel-aged Hardywood Singel
