Talk Like A Pirate With Heavy Seas At Hurley’s Tavern & Southern Railway Taphouse Today

Credit: Heavy Seas

Credit: Heavy Seas

Once again it is time to celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day today Friday September 19th.  Of course, Heavy Seas is up in the mix but this year they have raised the stakes by attempting to set the record for the largest simultaneous cask tapping in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Making its first debut outside of Heavy Seas’ taproom, the firkin to be tapped at several locations up and down the East Coast will be Loose Cannon IPA with grapefruit zest.

The Richmond area boasts two locations on the list: Hurley’s Tavern and Southern Railway Taphouse. Beyond the firkin tappings, you can expect  many give-a-ways for including t-shirts, eye patches, stickers, temporary tattoos, and a backdrop for pictures.

Southern Railway will also have a live pirate show.

Head over to the Virginia ITLAPD Facebook event for more information and updates. The parties start at 5pm with cask tappings at 6pm.

Great Pumpkin Rides To The Camel For Heavy Seas Tap Takeover

Head out to The Camel and hang with Heavy Seas owner/founder Hugh Sisson as he taps a fresh 2012 Great Pumpkin today September 11th.

Plus, Ben Petty is getting older.  Who is Ben Petty? Maybe you know him from his time bartending at Capital Ale House, Tarrant’s Cafe, or The Belvidere at Broad. Or maybe you know him as the Hardywood tree in this video.

Yep, that’s Ben in a nutshell.

It wouldn’t be a party  without some amazing beer so The Camel is staging a Heavy Seas tap takeover with these beers:

Plank II
Land Ho!
Peg Leg
Loose Cannon
Small Craft Warning
2012 Great Pumpkin

Come on out for all kinds of pirate swag, amazing beer, eyepatches, live music, people yelling “Aaarrgh!” and lots of great times. Party begins at 6pm.

You’re Invited to the After Party

I’m heading out to Brown Distributing’s Brand Expo later today.  I hope to gain some info on what they have planned throughout the year.  I plan on taking plenty of pictures so don’t worry if you weren’t invited.  Besides everyone knows the after-party is always more fun.  Consider this your invitation.

The place to be on Monday April 2nd will be BlowToad at 7pm.  Brown Reps will be in the house. There will be at least two special beers on hand for the night:

Who knows Brown might have some surprises up their collective sleeves.  Guess you’ll have to come check it out for yourself to find out.

BlowToad will also be showing the NCAA Mens Basketball championship game if you’re into that sort of thing.

Pumpkin Beer Waffles

image

Friday night, I attended the Heavy Seas tasting at Once Upon A Vine South. Heavy Seas founder, Hugh Sission was even in attendance had brought a special firkin of Winter Storm filled with Maryland grown Chinook hops. Both Storms were delicious and I even got a signed poster!  A bonus at the tasting were the snacks made using Heavy Seas different beers; you can find a few of those recipes here. It’s only fitting that when I had my first taste of Great Pumpkin, I knew it was destined for the beer waffles I was planning for a scary movie party. Of course, feel free to use your favorite pumpkin beer. Don’t have a favorite yet then there’s still time to get some pumpkin beer at The Camel. In the meantime, here is my recipe for Pumpkin Beer Waffles. Enjoy!

Pumpkin Beer Waffles

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups  pumpkin beer — (12 fluid ounce)
3/4 cup  unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup milk
3 eggs, separated
2 tablespoons  honey
1 tablespoon  vanilla extract
1/4 cup  dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons  cornstarch
4 teaspoons  baking powder
1 teaspoon  salt
1/4 teaspoon  baking soda
1/4 teaspoon  cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon  ginger
1/8 teaspoon  cloves
1/4 teaspoon  freshly grated nutmeg*
3/4 cup canned solid-pack pumpkin

Directions

Lightly oil the waffle iron with vegetable oil, and set it to the desired temperature.

Sift dry ingredients except for brown sugar into large bowl.  Add brown sugar and whisk to combine.

Separate eggs: yolks go in a medium sized bowl and whites get set aside in a smaller bowl.

Add pumpkin, beer, honey, vanilla, and milk to the egg yolks. Whisk to blend and set aside.

Whip egg whites with a hand mixer on high until stiff peaks form – about 1 – 2 minutes. Set aside.

Pour melted butter into the pumpkin beer mixture. As you pour, whisk to combine.

Add the pumpkin mixture to the dry ingredients, and mix them together until just combined. A little lumpiness is fine. That will smooth out when the egg whites are added.

Slide the whipped egg whites out of the bowl and onto the mixture you just prepared. Gently fold them in until no white bits are obvious.

Once the waffle iron is heated, you’re ready to pour the batter. Cook waffles according to iron instruction.

Yield: 6 Belgian waffles
