Shaking the cobwebs off the blog just a today.

Hardywood is hosting their first ever Oktoberfest at their West Creek location today Saturday October 5th starting at 1pm.  And judging from this video it looks like they are going all out. I mean look at that tent and that shirt!

I joked with Brian about cooking bratwursts at the festival but as it turns out my schedule will have me arriving late to the festivities. There would have been VIPA mustard.

So maybe don’t be like me and instead get there early.  The schedule above is jam packed with fun. Maybe save me a bit of the oak barrel beers?

So go out and hoist these steins.

For a safe way home, use the code HARDYWOODFEST19 for 50% off a Lyft ride. Maybe next year Hardywood will offer this code for to and from the festival.

Check out the Facebook event for more details and updates.

Reconnect With Richmond Beer This Fall At Ardent, Center of the Universe, Lickinghole Creek, Hardywood, and Strangeways Today

Hello Richmond.

Sorry for the empty pages over the last month. It has been a busy one here as we completed our second and final move of the year. Sadly, I ended up missing most of Virginia Craft Beer Month but I’m sure you had a great time. I’ve seen the pictures. Now that I am a full fledged city resident, I am excited to reconnect with our breweries to see what they will be up to these coming fall months.

Let’s see what is in store this weekend.

Ardent Craft Ales

Sweet Potato & Sage Saison is back.

Hanover Oktoberfest & Das Bier Run at Center of the Universe

COTU makes one of my favorite Oktoberfest beers. You are missing out if you haven’t tried simmering bratwurst in it before grilling.

Also, I hope there are some of these smoked beers left because I missed out.

Maiden’s Adventure Release & Pumpkin Picking Party at Lickinghole Creek

Show LCCB some love this weekend as they go from summer into fall in one weekend.

Farmhouse Pumpkin & RVA IPA Release at Hardywood

Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin

Brewed in the style of the farmhouse ales of Belgium’s southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin utilizes a blend of rye, wheat and barley in the grain bill, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar clove and whole allspice harmonize with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root.Farmhouse Pumpkin Ale incorporates local ingredients from Grandma’s Pumpkin’s of North Chesterfield, Ellwood Thompson’s, Sauer’s Spices and Penzeys Spice Company.

Hardywood RVA IPA

Our “community hopped IPA” is brewed exclusively with freshly harvested local hops, from the first bittering hop addition to the flavoring/aroma additions to a final wet hop addition, more than 300 pounds of local Cascade, Columbus, Chinook, Glacier, Magnum, Nugget and Centennial hops were used in this 60-barrel batch of beer. Brewed just once a year when hops are at their peak freshness, RVA IPA is sure to go quickly!

Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin and RVA IPA will be available in 750mL bottles, 4 packs and for growler fills at 2pm. Roundabound Pretzels,BoDillaz and Slideways Mobile Bistro on site through the day!

Join us for a special performance of the seminal Paul Simon album, Graceland, presented as RVA production company Spin, Spit & Swear‘s Cover To Cover at 7pm:

Gourd of Thunder Release at Strangeways

Strangeways Gourd of Thunder

Your favorite pumpkin brew is back- with one twist- it’s now available on draft and in 750 ml bottles.

Gourd of Thunder is a dark and gnarly Imperial Pumpkin Porter brewed with freshly picked local pumpkins that were ripened on the vine while continuously listening to heavy metal. The malty pumpkin backbone fuses robustly with a milky sugar creaminess. Bourbon vanilla beans lay down a rock-steady foundation that drives the cinnamon, ginger and clove spices through your skull. This brew does not merely mimic the flavor of a mortal pumpkin pie. Gourd of Thunder will cataclysmically blow your mind with its face-melting, high-voltage attitude. Headbangers Unite!

Get Ready Richmond! Capital Ale House’s Oktoberfest Returns September 21st

Cap Ale Oktoberfest logo 2013Yes, Richmond. It is getting to be that time of year. Oktoberfest! Here are the details on Capital Ale House’s event this year.

Prost Virginia! Capital Ale House Oktoberfest Returns September 21st and 28th

Virginia craft beers and German-style cuisine take center-stage at Capital Ale’s celebration in Downtown Richmond and Fredericksburg.

Richmond, VA (August 12, 2013) – Capital Ale House’s 10th Annual Oktoberfest returns to Downtown Richmond onSaturday, September 21st and to Downtown Fredericksburg on Saturday, September 28th, highlighting Virginia beers paired with traditional German food items. But food and drink isn’t all Oktoberfest has to offer – as each Capital Ale House location will have surrounding streets closed off as crowds listen to live musical performances, German dance groups and family-friendly Kinderplatz: a kids space with giant inflatables, face-painting, balloon animals and many other family features.

“We’re proud to offer something for everyone at Oktoberfest, and this year, we want to give our German celebration a Virginia accent,” said Matt Simmons, President of Capital Ale House. “2013 has been the year of Virginia beer and we support this growing industry by featuring an exceptional selection of local brews at this year’s Oktoberfest.”

Gates open at 11:30am and we will ceremoniously tap the keg at noon officially kicking off Oktoberfest celebrations. Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw will tap the keg in Fredericksburg. Cool Cow Comedy’s Rahmein Mostafavi will serve as MC at both events, keeping the crowd in stiches until the festival wraps up at 10pm. The Capital Ale House restaurant will remain open until 1:30am.

The festival has a $2 cover charge, with proceeds benefiting the Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society in Richmond and the Main Street Program in Fredericksburg. Each guest of legal drinking age can purchase a traditional 1-liter Capital Ale House stein for $3 (while supplies last), though guests are also welcome to bring their own stein. Families are welcome, though a parent or guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 21. VIP tables are available for groups of all sizes; please call Capital Ale House in advance for reservations. Free parking is available at both locations.

Choose from over 100 craft and imported brews, including Legend Brewing, Starr Hill Brewing, Devil’s Backbone Brewing, Hardywood Brewing, Center of the Universe Brewing, Blue Mountain Brewing, St. George Brewing, Strangeways Brewing and Bold Rock Cidery.

Menu items will include: giant pretzels with sweet mustard, bratwurst, knockwurst, sauerbraten and dumplings with ginger snap gravy, Jaegerschnitzel, roast chicken, German potato salad, red cabbage and sauerkraut as well as our regular menu offerings in the restaurant.

In observance of the 16-day Oktoberfest held each fall in Munich, Germany, Capital Ale House will celebrate (in-house at all 5 locations) for the entire 16 days with German food specials, dozens of German-style beers and exciting events.

Oktoberfests In and Out of Richmond This Weekend

Summer has ended and the weather has started to cool off. You know what the means? It’s time for Oktoberfest.  But which fest should you go to? I have three that have peaked my interest for this weekend.

O’Connor Punkelweisse
Starr Hill All Access Belgian Strong
Heavy Seas Plank 2
Victory Alt

Saturday

Starr Hill Love Firkin with fresh orange peel

Top of the Hops Beer Fest

Starr Hill and Beer Run present the 3rd Annual Top of the Hops Beer Festival in Charlottesville, VA Saturday September 22nd.  $40 ($45 at the gate) gets you unlimited sampling of over 150 craft beers from breweries such as Devils Backbone, Hardywood, Ommegang, Goose Island to name a few.  Tak a look at the breweries and their beers here.  Go here to buy tickets.

Mad Fox Hoppy Oktoberfest

Mad Fox Brewing in Falls Church has taken a different spin on Oktoberfest by celebrating hops Sunday September 23rd starting at 11am in their Biergarten.  If you need one beer to make the trek up, Mad Fox’s Orange Whip IPA is that beer.  They will also have their own Oktoberfest beer on tap and cask; I had the pleasure of having the cask version last night at Station 2.  You can see all of the beers they will have here.
