The Story Behind Legend’s Teach’s Oyster Stout. Try It Tonight at Pig & Pearl.

Legend Teach's Oyster Stout001Legend Brewing has teamed up with seasoned brewers from around the state for their 2014 Urban legend Series as part of their 20th Anniversary celebration. Each collaborator is coming up with an urban legend from their brewery’s area and choosing a complementing beer style.  Andy Rathmann, brewmaster of St George Brewing, is the first of the series and brings the story of Blackbeard to create Teach’s Oyster Stout.

Here’s more on that story from Legend Brewing:

The story behind Teach’s Oyster Stout is based off the story of Blackbeard’s capture in the Ocracoke Inlet. Blackbeard was history’s most widely recognized pirate who lived by his alias, Edward Teach. Leading up to his death, Blackbeard terrorized ships up and down the East Coast, pillaging vessels and causing trouble. Supposedly, Blackbeard was cornered and met his death at the hands of a Virginia naval crew; and to flaunt their triumph, the crew mounted Blackbeard’s head on a stake in the Hampton seaport. This urban legend argues that Blackbeard’s body still swims those waters in search of his severed head.

Andy Rathmann (Brewmaster, St. George Brewing) and John Wampler (Brewmaster, Legend Brewing) decided, almost instantaneously, that they wanted to make an Oyster Stout due to the close proximity of St. George to the Hampton waters. Andy had a buddy in the area who he visited frequently for fresh seafood, so he picked up 300 oysters from him to throw in the boil. The brewers were also really amped to tread in unfamiliar waters and brew a style of beer neither of them had brewed before.

What to expect from the beer: a smooth roast body balanced by the pleasant spiciness of East Kent Golding hops. You’ll notice a hint of brine and subtle sweetness from the shellfish.

Ready to taste?  Your first chance to try the beer will be tonight Monday February 24th at Pig & Pearl starting at 5pm.  Of course, you will be able to select from Potomac River Whitecaps, Choptank, James River, or Rappahannock River Oysters ($2-3/shuck) to have with the beer.  Head over to the Facebook event for more information.

Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery

Goochland, VA 23063

Save the date for March 1st from 1 – 8PM when Lickinghole Creek will debut their Enlightened Despot at a castle!

Due to the overwhelming response we’ve gotten from people from around the country for our Bourbon Barrel Stout release on Saturday March 1st, we had to find a larger space to accommodate everyone. Since we wanted to keep Despot Day in Goochland we reached out to the only place as extravagant as the Enlightened Despot…Dover Hall. They graciously accepted our request and we are very proud to partner with Jennifer McBride and her awesome team to bring Virginia a one of a kind beer release event.

Dover Hall is a private estate located in the rolling hills of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, conveniently situated in between Richmond and Charlottesville, and a two hour drive from Washington, DC. The estate’s 33,000 square feet command a majestic view of 55 acres of rolling hills and woodlands.

Known as Goochland’s Castle, this larger than life venue is the perfect setting for releasing a one of a kind beer.

Enlightened Despot is a Bourbon Barrel Russian Imperial Stout aged just over one hundred days in  15 year old Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve barrels.  Brewed with ten specialty grains this beer racks in at 78 IBU and 11.3% ABV. There will only be just over 2000 bottles available at $15/bottle with no bottle limit.

There will be special cask versions of Enlightened Despot tapped at different times throughout Despot Day:

Vanilla Despot
Chocolate Despot
Coffee Despot

Head over to the Facebook event for more information.  Music will be provided by Barrelhouse and The Big Payback.

Three Reasons You Should Get Craft Beer From Whole Foods Short Pump This Weekend

Whole Foods Beer Sale

  1. There is a huge sale on 750ml and 22oz bomber bottles going on right now, Friday January 31st, like as a I type this now!  The word used to describe the discounts was “DEEP.”
  2. The discounts will expand to include growler fills tomorrow February 1st from 8AM – Noon.
  3. They will tap Foothills Sexual Chocolate Saturday at 1PM. No growlers of this Imperial Stout as it is very limited.

Triple The Barrel Aged Goodness From Three Brothers at Mekong Thursday Night

I try to keep from telling you that you absolutely have to try a particular beer or go to a certain event.  I guess rules were meant to be broken because personally I really think you deserve to try these barrel aged beers from Three Brothers tomorrow night at Mekong.

  • Rum Barrel Dubbel — I snagged a growler from Whole Foods right before it won a 2013 GABF medal
  • Resolute — aged in bourbon barrels for 9 months! I was hooked after only a sip.
  • Barrel Aged Vanilla Elementary — aged in barrels that once held Resolute; less bourbon flavor but vanilla and oak highlights shine through.

I would expect these to be tapped by 5PM but who knows what tricks An has planned.  Go and try these irresistibly delicious beers from one of the rising stars of Virginia beer.

I have only one question for Three Brothers. What is “Senantona?”

Bourbon Stout Day Tonight At Hardywood

Hardywood Bourbon Stouts1UPDATE: So I did hear one of the last barrels wrong. The last two distilleries have been revealed as Bowman’s and Heaven Hills. Growler fills from 8-9pm!

Head over to Hardywood tonight  Friday May 31st at 5pm as they tap seven Russian  Imperial Stouts that have been aged in bourbon barrels from seven different distilleries .  Pick your favorite bourbon or try them all in a flight.  Five of the seven barrels that have been revealed thus far include:

Four Roses
Maker’s Mark
Wild Turkey
Jim Beam
Stitzel Weller

The last two barrels are due to be unveiled this morning on Hardywood’s Facebook page  but I’m hearing one of them may be a Reservoir barrel. Learn more at the Facebook event here.

Cozy Up To Hardywood Bourbon GBS Saturday

Hardywood Bourbon GBSRichmond Hardywood Bourbon Gingerbread Stout will be released tomorrow, Saturday December 15th.

Hardywood will open from 10AM – Noon Saturday morning for a pre-sale event for bottles and merchandise.   There is no doubt that people will be lining up for this just as they did for Gingerbread Stout.  Keep in mind there will be a 2 bottle/person limit.

Bourbon GBS will be available in half and full pints from 2 – 9PM.  The Joey Ciucci Trio and Paulo Franco & the Rateros playing sets starting at 3 and 6:30pm, respectively.

Only 30 barrels were filled with this beer. So when it’s gone, it’s gone.  Growler fills seem unlikely due to the limited nature of the beer.  This is not unusual.  If you remember, this was the same situation with Bourbon Cru.  At any rate, enjoy the beer while you can.

Go here for more information.

Hardywood Gingerbread Stout Release Tomorrow

Here’s what you need to know about Hardywood’s Gingerbread Stout  release this Saturday November 17th.

Hardywood will be open 10AM – Noon Saturday morning for a pre-sale event for bottles, growler fills and merchandise.  If you’re looking to skip the lines during the party, this is when you want  to be at the brewery.  Now while the lines will be shorter, there will in all likelihood still be some wait.  My recommendation? Patience.

Now the main party runs from 2 – 9PM with Gingerbread Stout available in half or full pints as well as a special randall.  Bands Grease Trigger and Zep Replica playing sets starting at 4 and 6:45pm, respectively.

Whenever you head out for your Beeradvocate 100-rated beer, just remember to relax and have a good time.
