So I’ll be in Tampa, FL for a week but here are a few things to keep you busy while I’m gone.

Yes, you should absolutely go drink Festbier at Ardent. Maybe save me some, please?

Get “Involved” and support a great cause at the Veil.

Triple Crossing has gone binary with their beer names. Don’t worry, I’ve done the work for you.  “01100111 01110010 01101001 01100100” translates to GRID.

While you’re there, you might as well grab some Clever Girl as well.

Hardywood has a new sipper coming your way in the form of Brandy Cru this Saturday September 23rd. Sounds like it will be a nice beer to curl up with by a fire as the nights get colder. Head over to the Facebook event to learn more.

Do The Georgie Porgie With Ardent Craft Ales & Center Of The Universe OnThe Quirk Hotel’s Rooftop To Celebrate Start Of Virginia Pride Month

Pride-Kickoff-eventGeorgie Porgie, Puddin’ and Pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry,
When the boys came out to play,
Georgie Porgie ran away.

Or at least that’s how the nursery rhyme used to go but today Georgie Porgie has decided to stay. You can taste why as Ardent Craft Ales, Center of the Universe, Virginia Pride, and OutRVA celebrate the release of two collaborations beers, Georgie & Porgie, on the rooftop of the Quirk Hotel on Thursday September 1st from 6 – 9PM.

“Georgie” from Ardent is a mixed berry “pie” pale ale (4.7% ABV). “Porgie” from COTU is a chocolate “pudding” porter (5.7% ABV). Both beers will be released in limited edition 750ml bottles with inscriptions from each brewery that capture the sentiment:

Georgie and Porgie are two beers that represent the love we have for craft beer and for everyone who drinks it, no matter who they are and who they love.

GeorgiePorgieRelease_SQ.jpg

Ardent and COTU will have taproom releases of their respective beers on Saturday September 3rd. Visitors to the taprooms and Quirk’s rooftop will be able to enjoy the beers in special limited edition glassware created just for this collaboration.

Head over to the Facebook event for more information on the kickoff event. Richmond, let’s pack this rooftop!

VIRGINIA PRIDE MONTH KICKS OFF WITH RELEASE PARTY AT QUIRK HOTEL AND RELEASE OF LOCAL LIMITED EDITION “GEORGIE” & “PORGIE” BEERS

VIRGINIA PRIDE, OUTRVA, ARDENT CRAFT ALES, AND CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE BREWING COLLABORATING TO HOST TASTING EVENTS IN SUPPORT OF PRIDE 2016

August 23, 2016 – RICHMOND, Virginia – Virginia Pride, OutRVA, Ardent Craft Ales, and Center of the Universe Brewing Company are excited to announce the upcoming release of their limited edition Pride 2016 beers “Georgie” and “Porgie” on Thursday, September 1 as well as a full line-up of tasting events throughout September in the Richmond area. This collaborative project was months in the making, with all four organizations and breweries coming together to make a playful, yet meaningful contribution to Pride Month. The resulting beers refer to the traditional nursery rhyme “Georgie Porgie” and not only lent ideas for the beers themselves but also was slightly adjusted from “ran away” to “decided to stay.” The statement on both bottles aptly captures the sentiment behind this project: “Georgie and Porgie are two beers that represent the love we have for craft beer and for everyone who drinks it, no matter who they are and who they love.”

Ardent’s “Georgie” beer is a Mixed Berry Pale Ale (4.7% abv) which represents the “pie” in the rhyme, and COTU’s “Porgie” beer is a Chocolate Pudding Porter (5.7% abv) which plays on the “pudding” line. Both beers will be available on draft throughout Richmond and in limited-edition 750 mL bottles. Please see the following list and descriptions of release events and supporting tastings throughout Pride 2016:

Go Into The Wild With Ardent Craft Ales & Blue Bee Cider At Saison Market Tonight

Check out this special tapping at Saison Market tonight Monday, March 28th starting at 5pm.

Two one of a kind offerings from Ardent & Blue Bee and a few more great Ardent Beers.

Ardent is bringing over a barrel fermented Wild Ale whose barrel formerly aged Catoctin Creek Rye and then Blue Bee Cider. The gents at Ardent let wort ferment as it would in that barrel, and the result is a lightly tart, peachy, wine-like 9% Wild ale.

Blue Bee is bringing a super small batch Grimes Golden Cider fermented in apple Brandy barrels that was then blended with the indomitable Hewe’s Crab apple juice and allowed to ferment wildly. It was then allowed to age on lees for months.

We are very excited that our friends would share their more eccentric stuff with us, and you all do not want to miss it!

Head over to the Facebook event for more details and updates.

RVA Beer Week 2015: Tap Takeovers, Pub Crawls, & Special Events

RVA Beer Week (November 1 – 8) is back for its sixth year. Here’s a word from Taste the Local:

It’s that time again, it’s RVA Beer Week! This is a celebration of our collective craft beer culture. Since 2010, when this week of events was first enacted, our craft scene has exploded! Back then we were on the low end of the national average at about a 5% craft beer share of our total collective beer market. Now however, we are booming! With some estimates hinting at a jump to 16% craft beer share in 2015, more than tripling where we were 5 short years ago.

Craft beer has become an integral part of our restaurants, festivals, and daily social life. Our area breweries have multiplied from 2 at the inception of RBW, to currently 14 area craft breweries pouring. The medals and awards for their amazing creations grow with each passing year. Our craft focused restaurants in town have won tons of accolades as well, and amazing growler stations and expanded bottle selections have opened at independent businesses and at local grocery stores. Even one of the most respected out-of-state craft power houses, Stone Brewing, has noticed Richmond. Choosing our fair city for their highly anticipated east coast location expansion! There is every indication that this is just the beginning of our cities craft beer renaissance, with an additional 7-9 RVA area breweries in planning that will debut to beer fans over the next year!

So help celebrate our collective passion and support our scene! Take the opportunity to introduce a friend to craft beer in Richmond. Go out and drink at your favorite brewery or restaurant. Buy something to share from a bottle shop or growler station. Join us and rally around our amazing beer town! Cheers!

Triple Crossing Debuts Gluten-Reduced Element 79 Today

Triple Crossing GR Element 79

UPDATE: Triple Crossing has given more details on this change to Element 79 over on their blog:

Element 79 – Leaner, meaner.. well maybe just gluten leaner

Our incredibly sessionable amalgamation of an American Blonde/British Golden Ale has undergone a significant change for those that have a gluten intolerance – and basically zero change for those that don’t.  We decided to try a relatively new product to reduce gluten levels in our  summer ale after an integral member of our team found that his gluten intolerance reached a level that forced him to stop drinking beer altogether – unacceptable in our eyes.

So, after hearing some positive reports about White Labs Clarity Ferm, we decided to give it a try.  The short of it is that Clarity Ferm is an enzyme that, while added prior to fermentation, significantly reduces the gluten content in beers made with barley and wheat.  The majority of beers tested fall below the current international standard of 20ppm gluten. For more information check out the White Labs spec sheet here.

Given that Element 79 is nothing more (or less) than 100% Pale Ale malted barley, we’d hoped this stuff would work its magic.  Sure enough, after a completely normal fermentation and normal everything else for that matter, we were left wondering what if anything actually happened.  The beer seemed like its old self, no changes… until we had our aforementioned guinea pig give it a shot – via two 16 oz pints.  Zero.  Issues.  But please be aware of the following: 1) the beer was made from a grain that contains gluten; 2) there is currently no valid test to verify the gluten content of fermented products; and 3) the finished product may contain gluten.  Needless to say, we’re thrilled he can enjoy his favorite beer again, and we couldn’t be happier to offer this beer to those with any sort of gluten intolerance, in the hope that they can once again enjoy barley based beer.

Cheers!
Team TCB

Head over to Triple Crossing today Friday July 10th at 4pm as they debut their reworked Element 79 as gluten reduced:

Times they are a’changing and we’ve decided to make Element 79 a ‘gluten-removed’ beer going forward!

That’s right, one of our flagship brands has been crafted to remove gluten. But please be aware of the following: 1) the beer was made from a grain that contains gluten; 2) there is currently no valid test to verify the gluten content of fermented products; and 3) the finished product may contain gluten.

This batch of Element 79 was treated with Clarity Ferm, a White Labs product designed to remove gluten from the beer.

To celebrate, we’ll have Relay Foods on site with gluten free products available to hand out to visitors. We’ve also got VCU jazz musician Willie D playing some jams throughout the evening.

Whether people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease will be able to enjoy this beer is a complicated question. For one while crafted to greatly reduce the gluten content of the beer, it is still brewed in an environment with barley, wheat, and rye grains. Secondly, the range of sensitivities for people suffering from gluten intolerance or celiac disease are different from person to person.

With those warnings out of the way, this beer should hopefully provide a new option for people who would not have been able to enjoy it all in the past.

Check out the Facebook event for more details and updates.
