Place Your Crazy Bet At Center of the Universe Tonight

COTU Crazy BetHead up to Center of the Universe tonight Friday April 5th as  they release their latest beer.  From the imagination of head brewer and armchair historian, Mike Killelea, COTU’s Crazy Bet Imperial Amber is named after Elizabeth Van Lew a prominent Richmond resident during the Civil War, who used her Church Hill mansion to hide escaped slaves and Union prisoners of war.

Crazy Bet has a base of English mild ale malts with different caramel malts to adding sweetness and a deep ruby color.  Hop additions in the boil include Columbus, Mount Hood, and Nugget in order to balance the bitterness and intense aromas. As a final measure, the beer is dry-hopped with Columbus and Nugget.

COTU will tap the new beer starting at 4pm.  Head over to the Facebook event for more information.

Can You Solve The Devils Backbone Mystery Pins?

Devils Backbone Mystery Pins 040113

Credit: Warren Haskell

In celebration of April Fools’ Day, Taste the Local has designed a pin crawl with the intent to fool you.

Here’s the rub: The first three stops will feature a pin of Devils Backbone beer, each with a “mystery” ingredient. We’ll tell you the base beer but you have to guess what’s in it. All votes will be tallied at the fourth bar, where the winner will receive a DB Prize Pack.

Here are the stops on the crawl along with the base beers at the first three stops:

5:30PM — Commercial Taphouse — Eight Point IPA
6:30PM — New York Deli — Schwartz Bier
7:30PM — Weezie’s Kitchen — Beggars & Thieves (CBC collaboration, anti-imperial rye lager)
8:30PM — Burger Bach — Dead Bear Imperial Stout (on tap)
