Let me tell you, Virginia loves itself some hops.  There will be plenty of hops to go around as tomorrow Thursday, August 7th is National IPA Day.  Here are a few Virginia beer events around town to get your hop on:

Pocahoptus Yeast Study at Center of the Universe — 4PM I really love what COTU is doing here just wish I didn’t already have a conflict.  That’s four different Pocahoptases (Pocahopti?) for you to try:

IPA fans rejoice!  It is an entire day we are dedicating to our favorite India Pale Ale, Pocahoptas.  Ever wonder how much influence a yeast strain has on a beer?  Let us school you.  We did 3 different batches of Pocahoptas using 3 different yeast strains; London Ale, Pacific, and a Belgian Golden yeast strain.  You will be able to try all 3 and compare them to the ever delicious original Pocahoptas.  Don’t drag your feet!  5.2 gallons each.  Once its gone, its history!  Oh yeah, we will have a pin of Pocahoptas as well.  What’s in it?  Come in to find out.  LONG LIVE THE IPA!

COTU will also be tapping a cask conditioned pin of Pocohoptas.

Yipee-Ki-IPA Day at Strangeways — 4PM Strangeways will have six different IPAs on tap for their IPA Day party. In addition, they are running their “Steal the Vessel” promotion from now until Labor Day; so get your growler, grunt, or blue Ball jar while you can.

Here are the IPAs they will be tapping:

  • Cranberry Disintegration Barrel Aged IPA
  • Phantasmic East Coast IPA
  • Cherry Phantasmic East Coast IPA
  • Lemon Berry Phantasmic East Coast IPA
  • Peach Phantasmic East Coast IPA
  • Raspberry Phantasmic East Coast IPA

Virginia IPA Innvasion at Joe’s Inn — 5PM

Joe’s Inn will be tapping a small but impressive selection of Virginia IPAs. Their $6 burger is one of my favorites in town.  Try one of these IPAs with yours:

  • Ardent IPA
  • Blue Mountain Prizefighter
  • Hardywood Bourbon DIPA
  • Hardywood Great Return
  • Lickinghole Creek Til Sunset Session IPA
  • Starr Hill King of Hop Imperial IPA
  • Triple Crossing IPA
  • Potters Hopped Cider

Here is your invitation to hang out with every single Richmond brewery Saturday August 2nd at The Cask Cafe from 2pm to close:

Hello beer lovers and fellow Richmonders,

This has been something that has been in the works for some time! Richmond Breweries United is a soon to be non profit made up of the Richmond Area breweries, Richmond Regional Tourism, and RVA Beer writers and bloggers. The group was formed to advocate Richmond beer culture and beer tourism. Cask Café on Robinson has jumped in to give us a hand. We are having a release party for the printed Richmond Beer Trail Map that will be freshly available thanks to Richmond Regional Tourism and Style Weekly. Also the first batch of promotion for RVABEER.COM will be available which links to the craft beer section of the Richmond Regional Tourism website. This party is open to the public and a great opportunity for all of us to celebrate the continued success of RVA as a beer town and the beginning of the 3rd annual Virginia Craft Beer Month. hope to see you there!

On more somber note this event will also be a farewell party for Ed Medina who is returning to town to say his last goodbyes to RVA before moving to North Carolina. Ed has beer a huge local beer advocate with his blog site www.vacraftbeer.com. For years he has helped our local beer scene grow, been an integral part of our community, and a great guy to grab beers with.

Here are the beers to be tapped from each of the Richmond area breweries:

Saturday is Hardywood Barrel Day

Yes, I’m out of town the same weekend Hardywood decides to release Bourbon DIPA and three other beers that have been barrel aged up to 18 months. Am I bitter? No…well maybe just a little. By all means you should go try them all. Maybe just save me a glass.

Here are the beers that will be available by the glass and 32oz growler fills tomorrow Saturday July 26th starting at 2pm:

Bourbon DIPA is hopped with a heavy dose of Columbus, Cascade and Summit hops, fermented with an abbey ale yeast that imparts some subtle tropical fruit and peppery notes and conditioned twelve weeks in freshly emptied Virginia bourbon barrels from the A. Smith Bowman Distillery, where earthy, vanilla, toffee and bourbon notes lend an exquisite mellowness to Bourbon DIPA. Also available in 750mL bottles.

Singel, aged for 18 months on Bowman’s Abraham Bourbon Barrels.

Russian Imperial Stout, aged for 18 months on Makers Mark Bourbon Barrels.

Belgian Quad, aged for 16 months on Cruzan Rum barrels.

Boka Tako Truck, Estes Bar.B.’Que, and Carytown Burgers & Fries will be on site from 2-9pm.  Enjoy live music from The Welcome Hips, White Laces, and The Diamond Center starting at 5:30, 7, and 8pm, respectively.
