Two Richmond Big Brew Spots For 2012

Saturday, May 5th, marks the 11th annual Big Brew Day sanctioned by the American Homebrewers Association. Homebrewers from around the  world choose from predetermined recipes to brew on that day.  This year’s recipes are an American Brown Ale and a Northern English Brown Ale; see the actual recipes here.

Starting at 9am, Richmond’s local homebrewing club, the James River Homebrewers, will be brewing at two locations this year the The Weekend Brewer in Chester and Original Gravity over on Lakeside Ave.  If you ever wondered about how beer is made, this is a great opportunity and promises to be a great time for all.  So drive on down and join on the fun.  Get there by noon and you may be able to join in on the worldwide toast.

Live the Dream, Steal the Glass at Weezie’s

It seems like you can’t sneeze without finding a steal the glass night in this town. Personally, I’m enjoying seeing all these other places in town join in on what use to be only a Capital Ale House thing.  Weezie’s Kitchen joins the fun tonight, May 2nd, featuring Old Dominion Brewing starting at 6pm.  Weezie’s will have the following Old Dominion brews on hand for the evening:

Gigi’s Farmhouse Ale — bottle conditioned Belgian farmhouse ale with Bravo, Select, and Cascade hops.

Oak Barrel Stout  — stout with peated and smoked malts dry hopped with oak chips and vanilla beans. This was the stout I selected to use in my first attempt at making a stout ice cream a few years back; it worked out really well.

Come on out and live the dream tonight.  Remember the fun starts at 6pm.

Many Glasses of Maisel’s Weisse

Once again it’s time for another Steal the Glass Night at Capital Ale House.  Tonight, May 1st, Maisel’s Weisse is the featured brewery of the evening.  I always get curious about what type of glass Cap Ale will be handing out so I took a look through Maisel’s varied selection to see if they had anything interesting. Boy, did they ever!

Only way to find out which glass could be yours would be to go steal your own.

Hardywood Grows Ringer Farms Kickstarter

You may have seen this photo from Hardywood about the arrival of their new fermenters that will double their capacity. What you may not know is that they have been supplying their spent grain to Russell Bell (@FarmerRussell) of Ringer Farms LLC (@RingerFarmsLLC).  Russell, a fellow beer nut,  has been using the grains as compost material for his crops.  Through Ringer Farms, Russell provides local produce to local chefs. In order utilize the additional spent grains produced by Hardywood, Russell has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a new trailer, shade cloths, and rain barrels.  If you love local beer and local food, consider donating to the campaign here.  If I could swing it, I’d love the personal garden consultation.

Welcome to My Birthday Week

Hard to believe it’s been almost a year since I started this little blog.  I’ve had a lot of fun meeting the multifaceted people  who are responsible for bringing craft beer to the River City. These people range from distribution reps, brewery owners and staff, and restaurants. I especially love when I meet readers of the site.  Here are just a few things that caught my eye this week.

Tuesday April 24th

Goose Island Steal the Glass Night at Capital Ale House

I’ve enjoyed every Goose Island beer I’ve had since it first hit town at Weezie’s Kitchen.  I’m not going to miss my chance to get a glass. I suggest you don’t either.

Friday April 27th

This being my actual birth day will make deciding what to do especially difficult because it’s not as if there isn’t just one choice.  Restaurant Week has had me going back and forth on where to dine this night.  Right now, I’m thinking Bistro 27. I know you’re thinking that’s perfect.  I was reading over Bobby Kruger’s Libation Nation today and thought it’d be awesome to have him make me a signature beer cocktail for the night.

After dinner, I will be seeing the Blue Man group for the first time. I really hope they’re worth the hype.

An after show drink location is still to be determined. I’m open to suggestions.

Saturday April 28th

Hardywood’s timing could not be more perfect.  They are throwing a Spring Frolics party to celebrate the release of their first Barrel Series beer, Bourbon Grand Cru.  This will also mark their sixth month anniversary.  I will definitely be there to get my allotment.  Get more  info at the Facebook event here.

Oh before I forget, there will be cake. I’m still working out all the details but I will be bringing my birthday cake to the party. Right now it is going to be a Beeramisu cake using Hardywood Mocha Belgique.

Victory Pints, Community Chest, & Poplarless Hoplar

With so many things happening around town today, Thursday April 19th, there just wasn’t time for separate posts.  Here are three I thought sounded cool.

FW Sullivan’s Steal the Pint Night featuring Victory Brewing

Starting at 5pm, head out to F.W. Sullivan’s to enjoy Victory Headwaters pints and steal the glass!

Poplarless Hoplar at Joe’s Inn

Head by Joe’s Inn in the Fan at 7pm where Hardywood will be tapping a cask of their Imperial IPA, Hoplar. Poplar wood is not used in the cask because in order to make a true cask ale, the conditioning process needs to finish in the cask.

Hardywood Park Singel Reuben Sandwich

What can I say about Cassie Keene? She is the beer goddess that has greeted me at every beer tasting at The Empress. She has been featured in Richmond.com’s 5Qs with a Foodie where we learned about her love of kimchi.  On heels of announcing her upcoming restaurant, GinkgoRVA, I also learned that she will be having a kimchi and beer pairing at Kitchen Thyme on June 10th.  Fast forward a few days when Cassie tweets:

Lucky for you, she agreed to share her recipe and boy did she deliver.  Cassie proves once again that beer is what’s for dinner.

Enjoy!

PS. Today is also Cassie’s birthday so if you see her thank her for this tasty recipe.

Hardywood Park Singel Braised Corned Beef
Ingredients
2.5 – 3 lb. corned beef brisket flat
2 garlic cloves
2 medium shallots, peeled and chopped
24 oz Hardywood Singel
6 carrots, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch pieces

Directions

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.  Put the corned beef fat side down, into a large dutch oven.  Add the garlic, shallots, pickling spice, and Singel.  Cover and place in oven.  Braise this for 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Turn the meat.  Braise for another 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Turn meat again and add carrots.  Cover again and place back in the over for another 2 hours.  After 2 hours, check the brisket for doneness.  You should be able to puncture the roast easily with a fork.  Put it back in the oven for 30 minutes if it needs more time.  Remove the brisket from the pot and loosely wrap in foil.  I refrigerated mine overnight and then sliced it for Reuben sandwiches the next day.  It is much easier to slice thinly when it’s cold.

You can speed up this recipe by braising on the stove.  Braise on low heat for 90 minutes.  Add carrots and braise for another hour and a half.

I’m sure there’s a way to do this in a slow cooker.

*enjoy eating the beer infused carrots

Hardywood Park Singel Braised Sauerkraut

Add 1 clove minced garlic, 1/4 teaspoon chopped rosemary, dash of dried thyme, and freshly ground black pepper. Stir continuously for another minute. Add 1/2 lb fresh sauerkraut and 6 oz Hardywood Park Singel.  Simmer at medium-low temperature until all the liquid has reduced.

Hardywood Park Singel Reuben Sandwich

Hardywood Mocha Belgique Waffles

Happy Easter weekend everyone.  I hope you’re having a relaxing time of it.  If you’re still planning for brunch tomorrow, you may want to add these chocolate beer waffles to your menu.  Of course, I am using Hardywood Mocha Belgique but feel free to use your favorite porter or stout instead.

Hardywood Mocha Belgique Waffles

3/4 teaspoon baking soda
