Strangeways Totally Tubular Zitrone (Lemon) Radler Rolls Out — Noon

Invented in the roaring twenties by Franz Xaver Kugler who had to think quick when 13,000 cyclist descended on his small town, Strangeways is introducing the first in a series of three thirst quenching beers to honor the 2015 UCI Road World Championship. Cruise in on your bicycle this Saturday to enjoy Radler specials and live the dream.

Zitrone (Lemon) Totally Tubular Radler
3.2% ABV~20 IBU
Migration Series

This is the first in a series of three thirst quenching concoctions brewed in honor of the 2015 UCI Road World Championships taking place in our own Richmond, Virginia. The Radler style was invented in the Roaring 20’s by Bavarian Franz Xaver Kugler. The story goes that Kugler had arranged for the construction of a twelve mile bike trail through the forest from Munich straight to his establishment, in an attempt to improve business by catering to a post WWI emerging movement of recreational cycling amongst the working class. A good problem/bad problem arose when 13,000 cyclists descended upon his beer garden on a fine Saturday in June of 1922. While Kugler counted heads, he quickly surmised that he did not have enough beer to quench the thirst of all his patrons. Being a sharp businessman, the quick-thinking entrepreneur remembered he had several thousand cases of lemon soda in his cellar, a beverage that had proven a tough sell to the beer-loving Bavarian public. To save the day, while at the same time liquidate some virtually useless inventory, Kugler mixed his lager beer with the lemon soda. To further entice the cyclists to try his new creation, he dubbed the drink the Radler, which is Bavarian dialect for the German word Radfahrer, or cyclist in English. He whimsically told his customers he had developed the mixture to keep them upright on their bikes during their journey back to the city. Needless to say, it became a lasting tradition that carries on to this day in Germany. Prost and ride on!

Hardywood Walpurgisnacht Smoked Maibock Coming Soon

WalpurgisnachtGood luck pronouncing the name of this beer. As it so happens, this was not the beer I was trying to find information on from Hardywood’s website. I was looking for the Berliner Weisse I heard they were releasing this weekend. If you had their Third Anniversary Ale, I’d imagine it would be quite similar as it is the same style. Enough about that beer; I’m more excited about the prospect of a smoked beer from Hardywood. I’d often joke that Hardywood should have made a smoked version of Farmhouse Pumpkin using smoked pumpkins; I may have even written it up on their idea board in the brewhouse.

There is no announced date for this release but Thursday April 30th is ripe food pairing possibilities with all the food trucks on hand. Oh and it’s during my birthday week. Read up on Hardywood Walpurgisnacht:

As night falls on the 30th of April, people across Europe come together to revel around bonfires, dance, and be merry. Known in Germany as Walpurgisnacht, the festival commemorates the arrival of spring in a folklore-steeped celebration meant to ward off the last evil spirits of winter. Hardywood Walpurgisnacht takes cue from its namesake, welcoming spring with a traditional Maibock brewed with Pilsner, Munich, and Vienna malts that’s accentuated with a generous helping of beechwood-smoked malt, lending a mellow smokey character to this rich, deep-golden lager. The perfect accompaniment for combating the chill of an early spring night or for firing up the grill on those first warm days of the year.

Hardywood & Plan 9’s 33 1/3 Black Vinyl Stout Release Is Today. All Of This Citrus Smells Amazing!

Hardywood 33 1_3 Stout2Hardywood has teamed up with Plan 9 to celebrate the record store’s passion for vinyl records over the decades, 33 1/3 years of vinyl love in Richmond to be exact.  They have poured their love into the liquid sound of 33 1/3 Black Vinyl Stout bringing “forth the warmth of sound and flavor achieved with a full bodied stout (or a vinyl record) and a chorus of citrus flavors to complete the track. Cara Cara oranges, Sumo mandarins, and kumquats harmonize together to compliment the deep chocolate malt backbone. Savor in stereo.”

I happened into Hardywood just in time to smell the amazing combination of citrus that would make it into this beer.  If you have ever sectioned any type of citrus, you how much of a pain it can be.  Yes, I helped a little bit.

wpid-20150227_172942.jpgHead over to Hardywood today Saturday March 7th starting at 2pm to give this collaboration a try. Black Vinyl Stout will be available on draft for pints and growler fills.

Hardywood will also debut an Irish Coffee Stout on nitro on Saturday as well.

Hardywood Irish Coffee Stout celebrates the luck of the Irish channeling warm rich, creamy notes of vanilla beans along strong roasty, dark chocolate flavors. We partnered with Cafe Stella in historic Ghent in Norfolk Virginia using their espresso roast to perk up your day and blend with Willamette hops for a beautiful floral, earthy aroma. Served on Nitro Tap. 8.5% ABV 25 SRM 40 IBU

Gingerbread Stout Plus Black Hand Coffee Equals Hardywood Christmas Morning Saturday

Hardywood Christmas MorningThis year Hardywood is giving you not one, not two, but three versions of Gingerbread Stout. Well, that’s three versions as of Saturday December 13th as Hardywood releases Christmas Morning.

Christmas Morning offers layers of gingerbread flavor complimented by the smooth nuances of freshly brewed coffee. We hope you make this part of your holiday tradition in the years to come.

All Good Things Come In Threes. Hardywood’s Third Anniversary Party Is Saturday

Hardywood 3rd annivIt is amazing to think that we are looking towards the end of the year. Where did the time go?

Hardywood has come a long way in three years.  This year alone their distribution footprint has expanded west as far as Roanoke, north to Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, and east to the Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads areas. Their new grain silos outside the warehouse will be put to good use keeping thirsty patrons satiated.

In the coming weeks, Hardywood will mark another first, the addition of a second flagship (year round) beer in the form of Hardywood Pils:

Crisp, clean and incomparably quaffable, Hardywood Pils sparkles a brilliant shade of gold with a rich, cloud-white head. Hand crafted with only the finest European pilsner malt and German noble hops, Pils is patiently conditioned for weeks in our lagering tanks, maturing into a beer that refreshes the palate and satiates the soul. Brewed in strict accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, this classic pilsner is the quintissential lager beer in its purest form. A tad drier than its Bohemian cousin with the signature snappy herbal spice of Bavarian Hallertau hops to balance delicate maltiness, this pils offers a nod to old world tradition by the innovative brewers at Hardywood. Prost!

You will have to wait until November 1st to try this at the brewery or you can get a sneak preview at Scott’s Addition Pumpkin Festival on Saturday. Pils will hit the market in draft and six packs starting November 3rd.

Let’s get back to the day at hand.  Hardywood will celebrate their third anniversary Saturday October 25th starting at 2pm. The end of a momentous third year would be incomplete without Hardywood Third Anniversary Ale, “a classic style Berliner Weisse that will refresh your palate with tart complexities found in this German-style sour beer. Bright, dry, and refreshing, our Berliner Weisse has a strikingly tart start and prickly finish. Straw-like color and natural haze due to an abundance of wheat intensifies the rustic feel of this beer. Tart citrus notes explode on your palate, while the dry finish leaves you wanting more.”

Oh no, Hardywood is not just stopping at one Berliner Weisse; they have bottled three variants using Apricot, Cranberry, and Raspberry.  Each variant will be available on draft and in 4-packs to go (750mL bottles). (Limit one 4-pack per person, no growler fills.)

You’d think that would be enough. You’d be wrong.  Hardywood has enlisted three craft cocktail masters to create signature syrups to be served with the base Berliner Weisse:

  • Mattias Hagglund (Heritage): syrup of Virginia Cameo apples with lemon thyme and lemon zest.
  • Thomas Leggett (The Roosevelt): syrup of ruby red grapefruit
  • Jay Bayer (Saison): passion fruit and mosaic hops syrup that was also dry hopped with mosaic hops. The hops were boiled for 10 and 5 minutes for a bit of flavor and nose.

I feel like there needs to be a #RVAdine Flight option to be able to enjoy all three syrups against the base.

Live music will start at 5pm from The Red Hot Lava Men (pure surf), Goldrush (rock & roll music. Songs about stuff and beyond), and Black Girls (swaggering and seductive Motown rock).

Check out the Facebook event for more information and updates then head out and raise a few glasses.
