Triple Crossing’s First Anniversary Weekend Celebration Starts Friday

Comedy Coalition Prom at Triple CrossingTriple Crossing will celebrate their first anniversary with a weekend full of events and a special beer starting Friday April 10th. Here are all the details as detailed on their blog:

It’s been a year since we opened our doors to RVA and to say it’s been great is an understatement for sure.  We have been incredibly well supported and watched our vision and goal for this brewery take shape and become an actual thing.  Pretty surreal honestly.

Anyway, our 1st Anniversary weekend is upon us.

For Friday April 10th, the tasting room will run pretty much as it usually does with one double winged taloned exception:

Open at 4pm with Propane BBQ Food Truck and the Cary Street Ramblers taking the stage at 7pm – Double Falcon Smash Release – the love for our first ever raptor continues with this double IPA that follows the blueprint of Falcon Smash IPA– slightly more malt, lots more dextrose, topped off with an obscene poundage of double dry hops, and potently fresh.  8% ABV,  90IBU draft and growler fills only.

Saturday April 11th 12pm-10pm – Nectar and Knife DIPA 22oz bottles and draft.  1st Anniversary Ale – Saison Brett bottle only release, and a seperate Brett Saison – single hop draft only tapping at 2pm.  Cultured Swine and Sausage Fest will be serving up food.  Boxwave plays at 7pm.

Some direction on how we plan to serve you throughout the day on Saturday:

  • Wrist bands – all patrons over 21 wanting to consume onsite beer (no bottles, no growlers) will be greeted at our front door on Foushee Street to have their ID checked and wrist band issued.
  • Beer Tickets and Bottle Sales Table – as you enter our building after receiving your wristband, you’ll see a table to the left of the bar staffed by dedicated TCB team members:
  • Drink Tickets – one draft pour per ticket
  • Bottles – Nectar and Knife DIPA, Liberty or Death Porter, and Saison Brett bottles will only be sold at this table starting at 12PM.  Each bottle type has a strict 4 bottle per variety per person limit.

After your drink tickets have been secured, move to the bar and one of our skilled beer servers will pour your selection after taking your ticket. Some other noted restrictions we have added only in an attempt to get everyone beer as quickly as we can:

  • No sales of any kind at the bar – beer tickets exchanged for draft pours only.
  • No growler fills on Saturday only
  • No tasting samples or flights either, as this significantly slows down our ability to serve everyone. The whole objective of this post and the Anniversary Party is to make the experience rule as much as possible, and to make it as efficient as possible for you great people to get a beer.

A  note about our first ever bottled, brett conditioned Saison –

This beer has been in the bottle for ~ 8 weeks.   While the brett character is beginning to show itself in the flavor, aroma, and slightly increased carbonation levels – this particular beer will continue to evolve over the course of several more months depending on what level of brett character you enjoy.  More time at room temp will draw out more of that signature brett charm as it goes through fermentation under the stress of bottle conditioning.

Can’t wait to see you all next weekend and thank you for all of the support.

Hardywood Walpurgisnacht Smoked Maibock Coming Soon

WalpurgisnachtGood luck pronouncing the name of this beer. As it so happens, this was not the beer I was trying to find information on from Hardywood’s website. I was looking for the Berliner Weisse I heard they were releasing this weekend. If you had their Third Anniversary Ale, I’d imagine it would be quite similar as it is the same style. Enough about that beer; I’m more excited about the prospect of a smoked beer from Hardywood. I’d often joke that Hardywood should have made a smoked version of Farmhouse Pumpkin using smoked pumpkins; I may have even written it up on their idea board in the brewhouse.

There is no announced date for this release but Thursday April 30th is ripe food pairing possibilities with all the food trucks on hand. Oh and it’s during my birthday week. Read up on Hardywood Walpurgisnacht:

As night falls on the 30th of April, people across Europe come together to revel around bonfires, dance, and be merry. Known in Germany as Walpurgisnacht, the festival commemorates the arrival of spring in a folklore-steeped celebration meant to ward off the last evil spirits of winter. Hardywood Walpurgisnacht takes cue from its namesake, welcoming spring with a traditional Maibock brewed with Pilsner, Munich, and Vienna malts that’s accentuated with a generous helping of beechwood-smoked malt, lending a mellow smokey character to this rich, deep-golden lager. The perfect accompaniment for combating the chill of an early spring night or for firing up the grill on those first warm days of the year.

Show Garden Grove Some Love This Valentine’s Day

Head over to Garden Grove Brewing in Carytown today Saturday February 14th for their grand opening as the 100th Virginia brewery.

Here is what they will have on tap for the grand opening starting at noon:

The Farmhouse — Belgian Saison (ABV 6%;  IBUs 36;  O.G. 1.052;  12oz $6)
A delicious blend of fruit and spice on a barley, wheat, and rye base. This ale cherishes and toys with the Saison tradition.

The Knight — Belgian Triple (ABV 9.1%;  IBUs 32;  O.G. 1.080;   10oz $7)
Esters and Phenols take flight at 9.1% ABV with the right amount of malt character to keep it grounded.

Southern Hemi India Pale Ale  (ABV 7.1%;  IBUs 60;  O.G. 1.068;   12oz  $7)
This IPA featuring hops entirely from New Zealand and Australia introduces a fruit forward hop character completely unique from West Coast, East Coast, and British IPAs.  The malt character is rich yet the beer is still dry and crisp ensuring that the hops are the star attraction.

Ronnie’s Red Ale  (ABV 6.8%;  IBUs 56;  O.G. 1.065;   12oz $6)
Our British red ale is an exercise in malt and hop excess.  The malt and hop characters are in a battle to be the stars.

Carytown Brown  (ABV 5.6%;  IBUs 36;  O.G. 1.054;   12oz $5)
A British style brown with an American twist.  Clean, drinkable with a restrained bitterness but quite rich in caramel, chocolate, and nuts. Nutella and peanut butter on toast.

Solera Stout (ABV 8%;  IBUs 58;  O.G. 1.072;   10 oz $6)
We aim to have an ever evolving complex Imperial Stout reminiscent of a fine port by using the Solera System.  We generally blend in up to 10% of older vintages of our Imperial Stout into the most recent batch in the fermenter.

Honey Sparkler (ABV 8%;  IBUs  0;  O.G. 1.066;   10oz $7)
A confused soul that is reminiscent of a fine sparkling wine.  Our Sparkler is formulated with white sorghum, orange blossom honey and finished with a touch of the French hop variety Strisselpalt to heighten the fruity aromas. Great acidity, effervescence, fruit, and delicious honey flavors make it thirst quenching. Gluten Free.

Take a look inside the brewery from my time during the soft opening.

Don’t Miss Hardywood Milkman & Cigar City Milkmaid Collaboration Release Saturday

Hardywood Milkman Cigar City MilkmaidHardywood and Cigar City have joined forces to create two original milk stouts — Milkman and Milkmaid.

With its full body, palate coating viscosity, and a hefty 13.5% ABV, The Milkman is a beer to be reckoned with. Heaps of chocolate malts and a massive addition of gourmet cocoa nibs meld with a generous dose of milk sugar to satisfy the biggest chocolate craving. Available on draft at the brewery and in 750mL bottles to go (limit 2 bottles per guest, no growler fills).

The Milkmaid displays a copper to amber color, surprising and delighting your olfactory senses and tastebuds with the unmistakable roasted and chocolate notes of a stout. Cocoa nibs from Ghana and Ecuador impart hints of espresso and roast, while a unique combination of hop varieties adds layers of dark chocolate and licorice. 7%ABV Available in 750mL bottles to go only (limit 2 bottles per guest).

These stouts will be available for the first time anywhere Saturday January 24th starting at 2pm. A sweeping lineup of Hardywood and Cigar City beers will join these two new stouts to create an event not to be missed.

Lickinghole Creek’s Vanilla Virginia Black Bear Is A Panda. A Snow Panda.

Lickinghole Creek debuts the latest in their series of imperial stouts today Saturday January 10th at noon.

Vanilla Virginia Black Bear is the yang to Virginia Black Bear’s yin. Ten Specialty Grains comprise the backbone of the bear and high alpha American hops give the bear his teeth. Notes of dark chocolate and coffee abound and fresh vanilla rounds out the flavor. Used as the base beer for Illuminatos, the Vanilla Virginia Black Bear has casually drifted to meander where he wants. Watch out, he hugs.

I’m hearing Illuminatos will be aged in rum barrels. Head over to the Facebook event for more details.

Next up in LCCB’s stout series will be Heir Apparent, a Mexican spiced stout. Hmmm…sounds like LCCB is working up to a stout fest or maybe these will be unveiled on Despot Day.
