American Craft Beer Week RVA 2013: Festivals & Parties

American Craft Beer Week officially runs from May 13th to 19th but as in years past Richmond will start the party early.  Here are some details on festivals and parties happening during the week.  Bookmark this page and check back for updates.

Saturday May 11th

Virginia Hops and Barley Fest

The third annual Virginia Hops & Barley Festival will feature over 30 Virginia craft beers.  Tickets are $15/person in advance or $20/person at door if available and include unlimited sampling of all the beers. VIP tickets are $45/person and include:

Private Restrooms

Designated driver tickets will be sold at the gate.

JRHB will celebrate their 30th anniversary at Legend Saturday night.  While it is a private party, there is nothing stopping you from heading to Legend to raise a glass to one of the oldest homebrew clubs in the country.

Style Weekly Brings RVA Beer Big Guns To Capital Ale House

Join Style Weekly’s Jason Roop as he presents a panel discussion on Richmond’s craft beer revolution at Capital Ale House Downtown Thursday March 21st. Here are the big guns of the Richmond beer scene joining in on the Barons of Beer event:

  • Dave Gott — vice president, Legend Brewing
  • Patrick Murtaugh — co-founder, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
  • Steve McKenna — bartender, co-star of “Drinking Made Easy”
  • An “Mekong” Bui — chief beer officer at Mekong Vietnamese Restaurant
  • Mike Killelea — head brewer, Center of the Universe Brewing & Chairman of the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild

The event starts at 5:30pm with a special tasting.  The panel discussion will start at 6pm followed by a beer enthusiast reception from 7 – 8pm.  Tickets are $25/person and include 3 tastings and hors d’oeuvres.  Go here to buy tickets and for more information.

Bourbon Your Saturday With Hardywood And Starr Hill

Bourbon Weekend 030213Looking for bourbon barrel aged stouts this Saturday March 2nd? Here are two ways to get your fix.

Hardywood Bourbon Sidamo Release

Hardywood celebrates the release of their barrel aged Sidamo Coffee Stout with a bottle-only sale in the morning followed by tasting room opening for bottles, draft, and food vendors at 2pm.   and an acoustic evening of Exebelle and the Rusted Cavalcade!

Hardywood will be open 10AM – Noon Saturday morning for a pre-sale event for bottles and merchandise.  If you’re looking to skip the lines before tasting room hours start at 2PM, this is when you want  to be at the brewery.

Tasting room hours will be open from 2 – 9PM with Bourbon Sidamo Coffee Stout available in half or full pints with most likely a special randall.  Exebelle and the Rusted Cavalcade will play acoustic sets starting at 5:30pm.

Food vendors for the night will be Monique’s Crepes, Estes BarBQue, and Station 2.

Starr Hill ROCK MS Bourbon Barrel Cryptical Release

Take the scenic drive up to Starr Hill in Crozet, VA as they kick off their month-long celebration of ROCK MS.  They will be having a special tapping of their rare Bourbon Barrel Cryptical Imperial Stout in their tasting room.

While bottles will be made available at a later date, tastings, pints and growler fills will be available. Sign up to stake your claim for special Bourbon Barrel Cryptical bottles from their super limited run of this extremely rare brew.

Local food truck favorites Delicious George and The Lunchbox will be serving grub. If you have what it takes you compete in a fierce corn hole tournament for VIP tickets to ROCK MS, Starr Hill merchandise  and more. This Saturday marks the first of many community events surrounding Starr Hill’s  fundraising efforts for the National MS Society Blue Ridge Chapter and the James Q. Miller MS Clinic at UVA. The main event, ROCK MS will be held at the Jefferson Theater on Saturday, April 13th featuring the soul legend Charles Bradley.

Craft Beer Enters Virginia Wine Expo’s Burger Blast For First Time This Friday

Now in its sixth year, the  Virginia Wine Expo will offer craft beer for the first time as they present Burger Blast this Friday February 22nd from 5 – 10pm.  Burger Blast will feature artisan burgers with samplings of craft beer and wine.

Join Good People Beer Club At Mekong For Bottle Share To Benefit MS Society

Mekong GPBC Bottle ShareHead over to Mekong this Saturday February 9th to participate in a bottle share thrown by the Good People Beer Club with Screens N Suds to raise money to benefit MS Society.

The bottle share will be GPBC’s first and they hope annual event run at the same time with an event in NYC.  They are focusing on more malt forward beers for this sharing session and ask that you bring your best  stouts, porters, barleywines, scotch ales, etc.  $10 gets you in at the door and you will receive 10 pours for each 22oz bottle and 5 pours for each 12oz bottle you bring.

The event will last from 3 – 6pm with food provided by Mekong.  Make sure to register here and check out the Facebook event to see what other people are bringing.

Hardywood RVA IPA Release— 2 – 9PM

Did you pick or donate hops at Hardywood’s hop harvest festival at the beginning of August?  Come taste the fruits of your labor with the release of Hardywood’s RVA IPA — The Community Hopped IPA this weekend.  RVA IPA used more than 300 pounds of local Cascade, Columbus, Chinook, Glacier, Magnum, Nugget and Centennial hops to produce a 40-barrel batch of beer.

TJ’s Charity Oyster Festival — 4PM

TJ’s at Jefferson will reopen their freshly remodeled bar with a Flying Dog tap takeover and oyster charity festival.  You will  have to go to the Facebook event to see the awesome food menu but here are the beers:

Dark Horse Rides Into Richmond

Dark Horse Brewing rides into town this week bringing their Beer Advocate 100 rated Crooked Tree IPA along with several of their other beers. They are known for experimenting with anything from baby formula to doughnuts.  Obviously, these guys are crazy; I mean, come on baby formula?!  Anyways I think their beers will fit in just fine in Richmond.  Thanks to Brown Distributing, Dark Horse will be exclusive to Richmond for the entire state of Virginia.

Comedy of Laughing Dog Comes to Beer Theater

Beer Theater is back for another installment in Capital Ale House Downtown Music Hall tonight June 21st. Brewmaster Fred Colby of Laughing Dog Brewing will be the guest for this Skype tasting session.   Doors open at 5:30pm; the six beer tasting will run from 6-7pm. Cap Ale will offer happy hour special as well as an after event special.

The tasting menu will be selected from the following beers:
