Nectar & Knife DIPA Release at Triple Crossing — Noon

Triple Crossing releases their latest beer fresh from their tanks:

As IPA lovers ourselves, one of our main goals when opening this place was to release a DIPA that would be a hop-head’s dream come true. We think Nectar and Knife is just that. This beer is dry hopped three separate times with over 18lbs of hops. It sits right around 8%ABV, is a deep golden color and finishes perfectly dry. Prepare your palette!

Oh, and in case you get hungry, we will be having Boka Tako out all day for grub. Come get some.

Goochland Quad Release at Lickinghole Creek — Noon

Lickinghole Creek will fill growlers of their tasty Goochland Quad from noon to sunset on the farm. With its rum-like flavor, it makes perfect sense that the next evolution of this beer will be after spending time in Flor de Cana Nicaraguan Rum Barrels. Flora De Cana is Spanish for sugarcane flower. Look for it in a couple months.

We opened our doors May 2012. What a ride it has been so far! Come celebrate with us May 17th at the brewery. This will also be the end of American Craft Beer Week. What better way to celebrate than to keep it local. Really looking forward to this. Hope you are too. Cheers!

A Good Day In RVA at Hardywood — 2PM

A day full of live music and Hardywood beers.

How About Some Bohemian Rhapsody with Your Hardywood Bohemian Pilsner?

Of course, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” popped into my head today as I was reading about Hardywood Bohemian Pilsner:

While it may be difficult to fully appreciate outside of its homeland, the breadth and diversity of the Czech brewing tradition extends far beyond a certain Ur-lager. Hardywood Bohemian Pils gives a nod to the wonderfully fresh and complex unfiltered pale lagers being produced in the brewpubs of Prague. Brewed with an heirloom variety of floor-malted barley from the Czech Republic, Hardywood Bohemian Pils features a rich, bready maltiness balanced by smooth bitterness and spiciness from the exclusive use of Czech Saaz hops. A traditional Czech lager yeast strain ties the whole package together, creating a refreshingly clean yet characterful flavor profile with a crisp finish. Na zdraví!

Look for the beer this weekend. Here’s my favorite version by The Muppetts for your enjoyment.  What’s your favorite?

Good Friday For A Hardywood Manhattan Cru Pin Tapping At Heritage

Remember these couple of Instagrams from a few weeks ago?

This was an exciting project from an idea that started to take shape just before Hardywood’s Bourbon Cru release.  The idea seemed simple; transform Bourbon Cru to taste like a Manhattan. No big deal right? Just add some vermouth and bitters then call it day? Too easy.  Early on, I consulted John Maher, now of Rogue Gentlemen, on how to get the vermouth flavors without actually adding vermouth.  He was able to point me towards using red wine, oranges and a combination of spices but we were too late.  2013 Bourbon Cru was already packaged making it too late to do any sort of cask.

Needless to say, the gang at Hardywood were thrilled with the idea behind this pin.  So off to work I went again.  This time though I consulted the man who’s bar I have dined at on numerous occasions — Mattias Hagglund of Heritage.  One email from Mattias sent me on a whirlwind idea of making sweet vermouth from scratch just to use for this cask.  This was looking to get very expensive.  Thankfully, Mattias suggested using Cardamaro, a wine based digestif, otherwise we might have missed our chance.  Luckily, I had just bought some blood oranges.  Last thing I needed was something to absorb the flavors of the amaro — wood and some dried fruit.  But what kind of wood? Oak would have been an obvious choice but I figured it would be use something different than what the beer was aged in.  The wood and dried fruit would end up being the same flavor, cherry!  Most of the dried cherries in stores are of the tart variety, a flavor I did not want added.  Luckily, Trader Joe’s carried the dark sweet cherries I was looking for.  Once selected, I combined the ingredients in a jar then poured in the Cardamaro and letting the ingredients soak for about a week until the cherries were noticeable plump.  After that, it was off to Hardywood for addition to a pin.

That was a long explanation to tell you how this idea came about.  Here is all you need to remember.  This pin will be tapped Friday April 18th at 5:30pm at Heritage.  Come join me and taste the fruit of our labor.

Oh and this not the only idea I have for Hardywood cask beer.  The only clue will give you is a drink from Heritage’s menu — Bramble!

Head over to the Facebook event for more details and updates.  This will be a nice lead in to Saturday’s Bourbon Cru release.

Who knows maybe I will get the chance to make some cask beers with other breweries in town in the future.

Yes, that’s right. Hardywood will release the latest addition to their Barrel Series, Bourbon Barleywine, tomorrow Saturday March 15th at 2pm:

After months of maturation in Bourbon barrels, our barleywine mellows thoroughly, with a luxuriously rich mouthfeel and a soft, rounded finish. Caramel malts shine through on this copper hued ale with hints of vanillin imparted by the toasted oak barrels, making Bourbon Barleywine a decadent accompaniment to sweets, or a dessert all by itself.
