The Savory Grain Is Making Me Hungry With Their Virginia Craft Beer Month Photos

Apparently, we are all missing out on what Savory Grain has been cooking for Virginia Craft Beer Month.  Yesterday, they posted this Instagram of their menu board as they welcomed Blue Mountain Brewery for the night.

Both items sounded delicious but unfortunately I could not make it. Maybe I should have moved heaven & earth so I could have enjoyed this Blue Mountain Summer Haze Marinated Grilled Boar.

Scanning through the rest of the Instagram feed, I found they had two tasty dishes feature Legend Brewing on a day I almost made it to.

Legend Locomotive Lager Marinated Pork Chop

Legend Brown Battered Red Fish topped with a Cajun Creme Fraiche

Tonight, Wednesday August 14th, Savory Grain is hosting Strangeways Brewing for a tap takeover starting at 5pm.  I’m anxious to see what they will come up for the menu tonight.  Who’s with me?

Get Ready Richmond! Capital Ale House’s Oktoberfest Returns September 21st

Cap Ale Oktoberfest logo 2013Yes, Richmond. It is getting to be that time of year. Oktoberfest! Here are the details on Capital Ale House’s event this year.

Prost Virginia! Capital Ale House Oktoberfest Returns September 21st and 28th

Virginia craft beers and German-style cuisine take center-stage at Capital Ale’s celebration in Downtown Richmond and Fredericksburg.

Richmond, VA (August 12, 2013) – Capital Ale House’s 10th Annual Oktoberfest returns to Downtown Richmond onSaturday, September 21st and to Downtown Fredericksburg on Saturday, September 28th, highlighting Virginia beers paired with traditional German food items. But food and drink isn’t all Oktoberfest has to offer – as each Capital Ale House location will have surrounding streets closed off as crowds listen to live musical performances, German dance groups and family-friendly Kinderplatz: a kids space with giant inflatables, face-painting, balloon animals and many other family features.

“We’re proud to offer something for everyone at Oktoberfest, and this year, we want to give our German celebration a Virginia accent,” said Matt Simmons, President of Capital Ale House. “2013 has been the year of Virginia beer and we support this growing industry by featuring an exceptional selection of local brews at this year’s Oktoberfest.”

Gates open at 11:30am and we will ceremoniously tap the keg at noon officially kicking off Oktoberfest celebrations. Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw will tap the keg in Fredericksburg. Cool Cow Comedy’s Rahmein Mostafavi will serve as MC at both events, keeping the crowd in stiches until the festival wraps up at 10pm. The Capital Ale House restaurant will remain open until 1:30am.

The festival has a $2 cover charge, with proceeds benefiting the Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society in Richmond and the Main Street Program in Fredericksburg. Each guest of legal drinking age can purchase a traditional 1-liter Capital Ale House stein for $3 (while supplies last), though guests are also welcome to bring their own stein. Families are welcome, though a parent or guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 21. VIP tables are available for groups of all sizes; please call Capital Ale House in advance for reservations. Free parking is available at both locations.

Choose from over 100 craft and imported brews, including Legend Brewing, Starr Hill Brewing, Devil’s Backbone Brewing, Hardywood Brewing, Center of the Universe Brewing, Blue Mountain Brewing, St. George Brewing, Strangeways Brewing and Bold Rock Cidery.

Menu items will include: giant pretzels with sweet mustard, bratwurst, knockwurst, sauerbraten and dumplings with ginger snap gravy, Jaegerschnitzel, roast chicken, German potato salad, red cabbage and sauerkraut as well as our regular menu offerings in the restaurant.

In observance of the 16-day Oktoberfest held each fall in Munich, Germany, Capital Ale House will celebrate (in-house at all 5 locations) for the entire 16 days with German food specials, dozens of German-style beers and exciting events.

Pre-Game Virginia Craft Beer Month At Strangeways Compendium of Curiosities

Strangeways Taproom SignVirginia Craft Beer Month officially starts tomorrow Thursday August 1st but you can get your party on with Strangeways’ Compendium of Curiosities tonight.

The compendium is all new tonight and includes:

I.  MONKEY PICKED WALLONIAN DAWN HONEY SAISON:  We have to start by saying that this is not a joke.  Growing on some of the steepest mountains in the world are the highly sought after Golden Oolong tea leaves (used in this Imperial Reserve blend), which are infused delicately into this one of a kind creation.  It is so dangerous to procure these leaves that man requires the aid of only the most talented and agile of climbers…monkeys that have been carefully trained by Buddhist monks.  We do not recommend A.F.M. to make this scintillating climb unless he has only been drinking our Super Session-able Saison.  A perfect match!

II.  CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY WOODBOOGER BELGIAN BROWN ALE:  Emperor’s Chocolate Elixir provides subtle hints of dark chocolate which are then accentuated with luscious red raspberries and interwoven in the deep textures of our complex Belgian Brown Ale.  Liquid dessert!

III.  SAMURAI CHAI MIXOLYDIAN RAG RYE BOCK:  A unique Japanese tea is formed by blending roasted and popped rice with an amazing green sencha.  Then a healthy addition of fresh ground chai spices is made.  The result is a nutty infusion with a bit of spice to add to the slightly smoky Rye Bock base.  Prost meets Kanpai!

The beers will be tapped at 4pm.  Head over to the Facebook event for more details.

Goose Island Invasion Landing At Rappahannock Tonight

Goose Island Vintage Glass4Please turn your attention to the photo on the right.  This Goose Island vintage stemmed glass has been an object of my desire since my New Year’s Eve dinner at The Magpie last year.  Since that time, an opportunity to steal said glass had not presented itself until today.

This afternoon Tuesday July 30, Rappahannock will be the site of a Goose Island tap invasion and steal the glass night.  If you want one of these glasses as much as I do, you better get a move on; there are only 50 available.

Here is what  will be flowing Rappahannock’s taps for the night:

Sofie
Sofie Paradisi — Sofie w/ grapefruit instead of orange peel
Matilda
Pere Jacques
Pepe Nero
The Illinois — Imperial IPA

I’m hearing there will also be some Chi-town inspired dishes coming out of the kitchen.  Sounds like it will be a fun night. Beers will be tapped at 4pm.
